Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu (28 August 1814 - 7 February 1873) was an Irish writer of Gothic tales and mystery novels. Wylder's Hand is a narrative of hauntings. As in so many of Le Fanu's works, the ghostly, the spectral, whether actual or metaphorical, figure in large measure. There is also the overriding idea of Divine Providence, from which all Fate is determined. Like the figure of God, the narrative of Charles de Cresseron, from whose point of view the novel is disclosed, reveals an ultimate justice in all things. This was Le Fanu's vision. But by the same token, he saw the darkness.
