I found Sands writing to be captivating and flowing, which sucked me right into the book and made me finish it in a day!
Although, that gulping of the novel is also due to the characters. First of all, we have Jake. I loved this guy. He was sweet and dedicated and honest, and he owned to his mistakes and past grievances. He didn't hide or refuse to acknowledge them or take any hits to the ego by apologizing--more than once. I loved when a male character is "allowed" to do that, because often time it seems like in books a man isn't manly if he's not grappling with saying sorry which is absolutely ridiculous and I don't get it???
Then we have Nicole. She was pretty badass. I loved how everyone kind of thought her to be this helpless girl stuck in denial after what her ex did to her, but she wasn't and she proved everyone wrong big time. She was level-headed, sweet and dedicated and I actually loved that the culprit ended up having nothing to do with her. It would have been heartbreaking if it was her bro, although I really hope he gets out of that toxic relationship.
And at the end of the day, this didn't feel like insta love despite the real short time span of the book. I feel like Nicole's final words to Jake are what makes it what it is - she doesn't just love him, but she likes and respects him. And that may sound less than the former, but it really isn't.
Also, I loved the family dynamics between everyone. They made me smile and want to read all of their books!!
I have always wanted to read this series and a few of the latest books (18 to 21) are on sale on amazon right now so I picked the one that sounded the most interesting to try out (I mean, a male housekeeper who is also a vamp??). The synopsis has such a strong standalone series vibe so I'm hoping I'll be able to read this one without feeling totally lost :)
