“She was fire, she was darkness, she was dust and blood and shadow.”
I read The Assassin's Blade first and overall, I'm glad I did! While the pacing felt slow, which made it difficult to get into, I think reading this book first was the perfect way to begin this series. I wasn't hooked until The Assassin and The Desert, but I really enjoyed learning about the characters before beginning the main series.
I adore Cel. My heart hurts for her. Diving right into her backstory gave me a deeper appreciation for her character and makes me even more excited to continue this series! I also don't think I would've enjoyed jumping back in time if I read this later—it wouldn't have hit the same way. I'm glad I'll already know references to Cel's past.
In my opinion, reading The Assassin's Blade first is the perfect way to immerse yourself in this world. That being said, I can tell this won't be my favorite book in the series but that's still subject to change as I continue!
