I liked the ending even more this 2nd time around. I think it helped
reading/listening to all of the books right in a row. I've recommended
this series and author so many times and will continue to do so.

I’m fairly awful at finishing series, so I ended up buddy reading this one with my boyfriend as it’s a series that I got him started on and it’s only fitting that he be the one that urges me to finish it. I think overall we were both simultaneously pleased and somewhat let down with this installment. We listened to this on audio and really can’t recommend it enough! This series is a delight to listen to and MacLeod Andrews is a genius at narration.
Calamity boasts answers and promises a final showdown, it provides both of those but in varying degrees. We do get the answers we wanted, like what Calamity is and how it works…but when it gets around to answering the ‘why’ part it gets hazy. I liked the overall reasoning behind Epics and their descent into power crazed madness but it’s a reason that requires a lot more page time than we ended up with. So we were both left somewhat frustrated at the whole set of new questions we had thanks to the ending. The showdown itself is pretty nice though. We get to see Prof lording about in all his glory as well as some new Epics who have some rather cool powers, and there is a ton of tension to keep the story moving a long even in the slower planning sections.
Sanderson is one of the kings of world building and it’s really no surprise that one of my favorite things about this book was the main setting of Ildithia, or Atlanta. A city made out of salt kind of sounds like hell, but just the way he describes it makes it seem so beautiful. The idea of a moving city is pretty freaking amazing as well.
As an ending, I think it does a nice job wrapping up everything that was laid out before us in the beginning, and it really comes full circle in some areas. The characters are still as awesome as they were in the beginning, and made me realize I’m going to sort of miss David’s awful metaphors. I’m super happy I was kind of pushed into reading this one and closing out the trilogy because despite some lingering questions it turned out to be a damn good read.

It's been a while since I've finished Firefight. After reading all those bad reviews about Calamity from people I trust I was a little scared and I decided to put off the series for a few months.
Well, it wasn't THAT bad.
It wasn't great and it probably my least favorite of Sanderson's books, but yeah I didn't find it so horrible.
Yes, the beginning is boring and yes, the ending is kind of a joke, but still it was a fun read.
David's metaphors always crack me up and Cody is the best ever.
It wasn't perfect but that's ok.
Cool and funny series, it's perfect for a summer read.

We learn of a new city that the Reckoners will make home base for a while.Then there's a little down time while they are getting to said city.But then it picks
up again when they are in the city and making and executing plans.
I did enjoy Calamity even though it had the slow area.New character/characters and new city,it was still a fun read. :)

- After the devastating events that occurred in Babilar, we find David and the Reckoners in a new city, Ildithia. David and the team are looking for Prof (Jonathan Phaedrus). Prof was the leader of the Reckoners until he gave into the darkness of his Epic powers. David believes there is still a way to save Prof before battling Calamity.
- I love the cities that Sanderson vividly describes in this series and Ildithia the former city of Atlanta is made entirely of salt. Sanderson is a master at world-building and his creative talent blows my mind. The city Ildithia appears to move. Since it is composed entirely of salt thanks to an epic power, it crumbles but it is constantly being rebuilt giving the illusion of movement. Listening was fantastic as Sanderson conveyed in vivid detail the wonders of this world.
- The characters and their interactions are one the highlights of this series. This motley crew is hilarious and I loved every moment with them from the action, wisecracks, tender moments and seriously bad metaphors. David is now leader, but he is still totally David and the role of leader suits him. Can I just say that the romance between David and Megan is adorkable?
"You,” I said, tipping her chin up to look her in the eye, “are a sunrise.”
She cocked her head. “A… sunrise?”
“Yup.”
“Not a potato?”
“Not right now.”
“Not a hippo?”
“No, and… wait, when did I call you a hippo?”
“Last week. You were drowsy.”
- Intense action-packed scenes and freaking awesome developments with epic powers made this such a fun listen. Alternate realities, the introduction of Nighthawk, answers to questions and tidbits regarding this world’s history were all fascinating.
- MacLeod Andrews narrated and it is always a pleasure listening to him. He nails the tone and characters perfectly added an additional element to this trilogy that makes listening a must.
Decaffeinated Aspects
- Calamity the villain disappointed me. He was juvenile, whiney and not the fearsome opponent I expected. I will give Sanderson credit for tricking me; I never saw it coming when we learned who he was.
- I could not wait for the final battle with Calamity and it was such a disappointment. For a minute, I actually believed I had missed a bit on my audio. I hit rewind and Nope. Poof. Done. I am not sure whether this happen because most of Calamity focuses on Prof or if Sanderson struggled with how to wrap this up.
- The twists, revelations and wrapping up of the trilogy felt rushed robbing me of satisfaction I typically feel. Yes, we got answers but I was left with questions. I wanted an expanded version regarding Calamity. Why it happened and who ordered him.
While Calamity did not deliver the knockout punch I expected I enjoyed listening and was delighted with the overall Reckoners series. I would recommend grabbing your earbuds for this trilogy. This review was originally posted on Caffeinated Book Reviewer
