This one is a little less of a mystery, rather more of an emotional roller coaster for Stevie as she tries to figure out what’s happened to Win. There are few clues, and her psyche takes a hit. Her character really develops over the course of the book, a far more serious version of Stevie. Her insecurities and doubts come into play, and it’s difficult not to feel for her.

I loved this series when it first came out and somehow I just stopped reading! I'm guessing I lost track of new releases. So when I saw book 13 (yes 13!) come out for review on Tantor I decided I needed to catch up. When I started this one, I had a feeling I had read it previously. I think it was actually last book I had read but since I hadn't reviewed it and didn't remember much, I went ahead a reread. And coming back to this series was just as great as I remembered.

I just love these characters! Stevie is a great character; a witch who lost her powers but still has a tenous connection to the afterlife, mainly through her dead love interest Win. I've loved watching them both grow feelings for each other in a very sweet, I can't even see you, let alone kiss/toch you, sort of way. It's a very different kind of romance, right? So imagine how devestated Stevie feels when, in this book, Win disappears and she can't figure out if something bad has happened to him or if he has decided to "move on" (aka go through the light, leave limbo, etc). She's HOPING that he's found away to inhabit a body so he can join her in physical form. But Win had a lot of criteria for when he'd be willing to do that - person had to be dying, couldn't have family that he would be hurting, etc - so it wasn't an super likely scenario.

Watching her try to solve the mystery amid all the emotion made this book truly great. And the narration, delivered by Hollie Jackson was fantastic as always. She really delivers the characters tremendously and I felt the emotion. Really glad to be back listening to this series!

It’s almost Thanksgiving, and the gang is gathered around the kitchen table making a grocery list for their upcoming feast. They are arguing about whether Cheez Whiz is appropriate Thanksgiving fair when Win suddenly disappears. At first, Stevie believes he is mad and has slipped off to limbo…but soon no one can find him.

What if he has crossed into the light or met with foul play? Or worse what if he has tried to slip into a vessel (body) so he can be with Stevie in this realm? What id he failed? As Batfry tries to console her, they stumble on clues which only confuse them more. Stevie fears that Warlock Westfield has enacted his revenge and taken Win from her.

When Arkady cannot find him Stevie fears that all hope is lost. In desperation she contacts someone who might help. But what will it cost her? Dang, this was an addictive listen and filled with emotions. With Win gone, Stevie is forced to face her true feelings, and it was tough seeing her crumble.

Hollie Jackson once again narrated, and she did a fantastic job with Stevie’s emotions. Belfry still grates on my nerves and I noticed it more in this installment. Mostly because she was speaking more. But, her accents for everyone add to the cozy tone and I slip right in. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

Stevie Cartright has been ignoring the fact that she is in love with her spirit of her International Man of Mystery a/k/a ex-spy Crispin Alistair Winterbottom for more than two years.  Together they have solve mysteries and murders, rescued animals and even while straddling two different planes of existence, they have created a life together.   But she will come to regret keeping her feelings to herself.

When Win disappears in the middle of their argument of what to serve for their upcoming Thanksgiving banquet, Stevie at first believes that Win has gone off to have a tantrum on Plane Limbo. All too soon she realizes that there is more going on than just a ghostly sulk and her life may never be the same.

None of the reasons for her missing BFF are good. Win has either decided to finally go over into the light; he is trying to return to the Earthly Plane by jumping into a new body, ignoring with all the things that could go terribly wrong and that he could lose his very soul; or worst yet, what if warlock Adam Westfield, who stole Stevie's magic and has vowed to destroy Stevie and everything she loves, has done something to Win.

How is Stevie going to solve her most important mystery of her life without the help of her Spy Guy on a plane she can't reach? When Stevie starts finding odd "clues," she isn't certain what they mean or if they are even from Win. What if this is just a trap set by Adam? If it will save Win, Stevie is willing to play Adam's game. In fact, there isn't anything Stevie won't do for a chance to tell Win once and for all that she loves him, but is she simply too late?

This was the Afterschool Special version of our fun-loving spirit/witch team. Such an emotional story as we can do nothing but watch Stevie breakdown over losing Win. She is following clues as best she can when she is worlds away from where Win disappeared. She isn't certain that they clues she finds are even from Win or what they could possibly mean. When rumor hits that Win might have simply decided to finally move on into the light -- without even saying goodbye -- Stevie absolutely loses it.

This isn't the final story of the series but things will be very different from here on out. I can only imagine what will happen next.
