Welp! Here I go again - plunging down another Urban Fantasy series! Of course, this a fantastic world to get thrown into. I love the husband/wife team Ilona Andrews. Looking forward to the next book!

ps - the covers for this series are SILLY af. The is some romance included, but not a giant sex-fest. Although . . . I would NOT object to a sex-fest involving Conor Rogan :)

WOW!!!

Thank you, Ilona Andrews, for writing something that managed to suck me in from the first word and entertain until the last. Thank you to my Goodreads buddies, who guided me towards the Hidden Legacy series. I absolutely loved Burn for Me, and even with 100 other books ready and waiting on my device to be read, I can't leave this world. Luckily, I'm late to the party and I can move straight on to the next in the series.

The characters were interesting, the action-packed storyline captivating, and the interconnecting relationships fascinating to observe. While I'm always desperate for love and happy ever afters, in this case, I like where it's at. There is definitely a feeling of the cat chasing his mouse. I think this mouse is a lot tougher than she looks, though, and will definitely keep him running.

I want to know more about Nevada and Rogan, their magic, and what they will end up being to each other. Now that I've met them, I need to have more.

This is the second series I am reading from the writing pair of Ilona Andrews (after the Kate Daniels series of course). I've got to admit, it took me some time to get into it, but mostly because I was kind of always expecting and waiting for Nevada to turn more into Kate, or to be more similar to her. And Nevada ist most definitely not similar to Kate, which is a very good thing. Of course she is also a strong female character and she is sassy and often sarcastic, but in a very different way than Kate was. Nevada has a family, people she cares for and she has a pretty healthy outlook on life, especially compared to the messed up life Kate had. She has also not really a lot of brute power at her disposal, which is another very interesting thing. She can fight a little, she is an excellent shot, very intelligent and can handle herself, but she has pretty much no fighting magic powers, while Rogan seems to have all of them. I don't think I have ever really read a book with a protagonist that hasn't really got active, brute strength to end a big final fight with. Rogan has that power, but Nevada has not. At least not at this point. And I kind of like it. She is pretty normal (except for the magic she does have and is learning to control) and just got dropped into a situation that is way over her head and learns to deal with it.

To shorten this review a bit (cause I could go on and on about this), I enjoy the storyline, the side characters and the worldbuilding. It is really an excellent read and I'm very much looking forward to the continuation of this series.

As always, the world building and the characters are phenomenal. I picked up White Hot and Wildfire as soon as I finished with Book 1. I may be late to this party, but I am very happy that because I waited, I have more stories to binge on.

While it must be hard to beat their own world-building from the Kate Daniels series, Ilona Andrews does give it a try in the Hidden Legacy series.

This world is the same as ours except that in 1863, scientists created the Osiris serum which gave people magical powers, which was mostly used by the already rich and powerful. After realizing the flaw in giving God-like powers to people who already have too much power, they stopped manufacturing the serum, but those who already had taken the serum were passing on those powers to their children and their children’s children. Those with the most magic are called Primes and the families with many Primes are called Houses. Wars between the Houses are common.

The magical abilities varies as talents usually do and it is interesting to see what keeps popping up. Not every magic user is a Prime, and this story is told by Navada Baylor, a Private Investigator (part of an investigative family) who is a human lie detector. Her magic buzzes when someone tries to lie to her. She has a strong connection to her family and a strong moral compass.

In Burn for Me, the Baylor Investigative Services, or more particularly, Navada is brought in by MII, her parent company, to apprehend a Prime known as Adam Pierce. Adam thinks of himself as a rebel but he is more of a spoiled bully from the powerful House Pierce. The only problem that this spoiled bully can control fire and he is wanted by the police for burning a security guard to death during a bank robbery. Navada doesn’t want anything to do with this suicide mission she is being sent on, since it is way above her pay grade but she is told that MII will take her company’s business and holdings (specifically where they live) if she does not. She knows that MII expects her to fail, and is planning on using her as a scapegoat to House Pierce when she fails.

Navada also knows the only way she can bring Adam in and hope to survive is by trying to convince him to turn himself over to his house, which would be so much better then waiting for the angry police officers to find him and shoot first. The only thing that would screw up her plan would be if House Rogan were to become involved since Adam’s accomplice was the nephew of Connor “Mad” Rogan. But lucky for Navada, Mad Rogan doesn’t seem to want anything to do with his family, so she might just be able to pull this off.

That is until she is kidnapped by Mad Rogan, tied up in his basement while he tries to use magic and force her to give him information on Adam Pierce. Rogan can’t break Navada, so he forces his way into her investigation.

Sparks fly between Navada and Rogan but I love the fact that even though Rogan is an extremely deadly magic user, trained by the military, Navada continually stands up to him. She also has to stand up to herself, as she is quite effected by the sexual tension between them, but holds strong knowing that even if Rogan isn’t truly psychotic and dangerous as she knows he is, Navada will always come out on the losing end since she doesn’t have the magical strength or financial power to be an equal to Rogan. There would never be a long term future for them so it would eventually end in heartache for her.

There is no slow in an Ilona Andrew novel. There is either character building, world building or full out action going on in every scene.

While there isn’t an official cliffhanger, there is a continuing conspiracy thread which continues with the next two stories as well as the continuing sexual tension between Rogan and Navada.

As soon as I saw that Rogan and Navada were the main characters of all three stories, I quickly picked up the other books in the series and began my binge. The only issue I have is that Renee Raudman is the same narrator for the Kate Daniels series. Renee does a good job but it took some brain power to remember that I was in a whole other story.

My husband saw the title of this book last night and rolled his eyes so hard they almost fell clean out of his head.  And I agree with him; as a reader who struggles with romance, it was a bit hard to swallow buying a book called Burn for Me.  But I love Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series and her Innkeeper series has hooked me in spite of the sci-fi vibe it sometimes has.   This one didn't disappoint either.  And let me say up front that though this is categorised on the back of the novel as 'paranormal romance', it's definitely not.  It's much more solidly in the urban fantasy category; full of sexual tension but no sex.  The PNR designation might be because of the inevitability of romance in the future books, but so far, this is no more paranormal romance than the Kate Daniels series is.   I like Rogan.  I think the Andrews' team is setting up its readers in this first book, convincing them that Rogan is the anti-hero, but there's enough information sprinkled throughout the text that leads me to believe he is anything but.  He strikes me as a very human and moral character that made the hard calls and took a lot onto himself in order to spare others.  He's not a ball of emotions, certainly - no warm and fuzzies are going to be found coming out of him, but I like him.  He's decisive and expressive in the ways that count.   I also like Nevada, she's neither whiney nor angsty, and she's not the strongest magical person in the room wherever she goes.  So far.  The only thing I didn't like was:   her seemingly purposeful obtuseness concerning her own Prime status - she's a PI for heaven's sake, how is she not putting 2 and 2 together? (hide spoiler)   As much as I got thoroughly and completely sucked into this story, the plot could have been tighter.  There were several moments, looking back, where the storyline wanders or stalls a bit in terms of plot.  This is a lot of book for what amounts to nothing more than a story arc setup.  And I suspect there's a timeline continuity error, but I'd have to re-read the book to be sure (I'm almost certain Nevada heard from Adam after the attack on her house, though she tells the DA she hasn't).  But never once did I get impatient or bored - from cover to cover I never want to put it down.   Thank god I've already bought books 2 and 3.

Oh my goodness! Rogan and Nevada are both characters I became slightly obsessed with at the beginning of Burn for Me, and now, I just know that I have to figure out what is up next. Ilona Andrews did it again - a complete winner!



There is something special with stories including magic. When those stories are written by Ilona Andrews, there is even more that is special about them! Burn for Me is a prime example of their excellent writing, world building, character development, story arc, plot and general awesomeness. I don't really know what more to say than that - it was as close to perfection as the written word can possibly be.

Rogan and Nevada are very different, and at the beginning of Burn for Me, I thought Nevada might be slightly weaker than other heroines coined by the Andrews. It didn't take me very long to realize that was all wrong, though, and that I was participating in the creation of something totally epic.

There is a lot going on in Burn for Me, both when it comes to the relationships between the characters, the suspense and the overall story arc that I'm sure will continue over the future books in The Hidden Legacy series. There is romance, too, even if it's quite far on the sidelines, but the promise of what it could become is very strong.

If you're a fan of strong female characters, a solid story, lots of magic and both mystery and suspense, Burn for Me needs to be added to your shelves!

OMG! This book was downright awesome. I cannot believe I took this long to read an Ilona Andrews novel. I have read a few books within the urban fantasy genre which I enjoyed, but this my favourite.What the book is aboutNevada Baylor is a private investigator with Baylor Investigations, which is run by her family. Unfortunately, the business is facing financial challenges and as a result; it was mortgaged to the hilt. The company who holds the mortgage issued an order for her to take on an assignment, which may or may not lead to her death. She had no choice but to accept the assignment as failure to do so would lead to the loss of the business and her family home.In the midst of the chaos, she is kidnapped by Mad Rogan, a man who was rich, powerful and feared by all whom he came in contact with. They are both after the same target, so working together seemed the logical thing to do. However, their unexpected partnership will lead to them discovering things about themselves and developing feelings they never thought was possible with each other.What I enjoyedSuperb Writing: The manner in which the story was presented made me feel as if I was a part of the story. I loved he uniqueness of the setting and the premise. The story is set in a world that is similar to ours, with one main difference, magic. In the 1800s, a serum was developed that gave humans magical powers and since that time magic has reigned supreme. Years later, you have a world where some humans have interesting and unique powers. From the moment I was introduced to her, I knew I would love her. She cares deeply for her family and would do anything to protect them. She is not the type to behave like a damsel in distress. While working on this case she would come to realise that there is more to her powers than she originally believed.Conner Rogan AKA Mad Rogan is a formidable and complex man. He was former military and a trained killer. He has no qualms about killing when the need arises. However, I soon came to realize that underneath all that craziness lay a heart of compassion. Few were privy to this side of him.I loved every moment spent with the supporting cast of characters. I loved how Nevada’s family had her back. They had a bond that was stronger than any magic. It is rare for me to like the villain in a story, but this time around, I could not help but like Adam. He was cocky and entitled, but there was something about him that I found endearing.Fun and entertaining story: There was tons of action, and thrilling moments to keep me on my toes. It moved quickly sparing me no time to be bored. There was humour to help lighten the heavy moments. There was loads of sexual tension permeating the pages of this story, but there was no intimacy and no romance. Not that I am complaining. It is evident that there is an attraction there, but with all what was happening there would have been no to explore their feelings for each other. I am curious to discover how this aspect of the story will eventually play out.I was happy with the ending. Thankfully, it was not a cliff-hanger. The situation in this instance was adequately wrapped up, however, there was a shocking revelation in the epilogue which left me with questions. Thankfully I am able to proceed to next book in the series right away so my questions will be answered soon.VerdictOverall, this is a great read and one, which I highly recommend. World: This urban fantasy is set in an alternate version of Houston, Texas. Andrews has created a strong world with magic. World building is necessary for this curious reader, and she effortlessly gives us the back-story and explains all of the Houses. It is a simple foundation and allows them to expand upon it.

Characters: We meet Nevada Baylor, a human lie detector with hints of something more. She along with her family owns a private investigation firm. Nevada is my kind of female protagonist. She is kick-ass and protective of her family. Nevada does not whine when the shit hits the fan, nope she digs deep and gets things done. I adored her and cannot wait to see how she develops throughout the series. I loved her family from her teen siblings to her over the top oil-loving grandma. Did I mention her Mom is an ex-sniper? Loved it! Connor “Mad” Rogan was sculptured by the hands of God into a mouth-watering specimen! He is a bit of a recluse and a what is known as a Prime. A Prime is a high-ranking magic user, who rules a House. His powers will make your knees quake, or maybe it is his eyes. Either way, you will love the banter that develops and fall head over heels for Rogan.

Plot: Nevada is forced to take on a case involving a Prime who has committed a crime that left many injured and dead. He needs to be taken alive. This is Nevada’s toughest case, and it will push her, testing her limits and resources. Mad Rogan is also looking for this suspect when the two meet. Well, meet is not exactly the right word, but trust me you will want to be there!

Romance: Perfection complete with witty banter and snark that will have you laughing and begging for more. The tale is relatively clean, but that does not stop Andrews from creating delicious heat, romantic moments as she endears these characters to the readers. Rogan and Nevada have this chemistry that feels genuine. The snark and banter combined with Nevada’s thoughts had me laughing. I love that giddy feeling you get when a couple works so well. It reminded me a little of Reyes and Charley. *Oh yeah*

Caffeinated Conclusion: Burn for Me is like a perfectly blended cup of coffee. From the first taste, it is an orgasm for your mouth. You want to make it last but cannot stop drinking. The when your cup is empty you savor the memory and crave more.
