Having magic isn't all it's cracked up to be...

While I still really liked Wildfire, I felt like it was missing a little bit of the gut-wrenching, heart-pounding excitement that the first two instalments had. I think my biggest problem was that Connor was being too nice...thoughtful...considerate. (THE HORROR!!) I don't mind a little bit of nice, thoughtful and considerate from my favourite heroes, but when they're normally all gruff and grumpy, it's weird. Connor even seemed to step back a bit which I didn't like one bit at all.

I understand the why of it all and to some degree, I appreciated that he wanted Nevada to be strong and independent. It's just that I wanted Nevada to be strong and independent, with Connor always at her back. Not, at the back of his ex-fiance.

Yes, I get it. Deep down, I just didn't like Connor spending so much time with his ex... who's married... to a douchewaffle.

In the end, it's all good and Nevada and Connor walk off into the sunset hand in hand, and I'm happy. It just took too long for them to get to the *I can't live without you* stage.

The storyline was it's usual captivating and engrossing and the characters, new and old, were engaging and fantastic. I loved that Leon knows his magic power now but I also hated how much it messed with his head. He's just a little kid. Arabella's magic is quite funny and I loved that everyone is petrified of it.

I will definitely be going on in the series and I can't wait to get to know Catalina a bit more. Will I be paying $6.00 for a novella? I'm not sure. While Ilona Andrews tells an engaging story, I find it hard to pay the same amount (or more) for a novella as I would for a whole story. One day...soon...ish.

I am so happy that I delayed in picking up this series. It was awesome to binge the whole thing. This was a great finale to the trilogy, and there is now going to be a novella and a connected trilogy feature Nevada's younger sister starting by the end of the year.

Nevada is coming to terms with Rogan and his men being right outside the perimeter of her property. She wasn't happy that he so conveniently purchased all of the blocks surrounding her home, but with everything going on, her family needs the protection. Especially since her grandmother, the head of House Tremaine, has found them.

Victoria Tremaine is a very danger truth seeker, like Nevada, but unlike Nevada, Victoria doesn't worry about conscience or other people's rights. If someone has something she wants, she had no problem going into their mind and ripping it right out. Victoria is also the last Prime of her House and when she dies, House Tremaine dies with her. Victoria won't allow that to happen. She wants Nevada to join House Tremaine even if she needs to harm Nevada's family to make that happen.

With no other options to protect her family from her grandmother and just about every other House gunning for her, the Baylor family will be facing the trials to become House Baylor. It is the only way to be protected from attack. New Houses are protected for several years and any other House that tries to attack will suffer consequences.

Nevada's grandmother isn't Nevada's only problem. Just as she and Rogan are trying to figure out their relationship, Rogan's former fiance, Rynda Charles needs Rogan's help. Her husband has been kidnapped and she doesn't know who else to turn to, but she knows she can lean on Rogan. To make matters more complication, Nevada recently killed Rynda's mother so...awkward.

And while Rogan's ex-fiance is hanging all over him looking for support in her time of need, Rogan is trying to make sure Nevada understands all her "options." If Nevada and her family pass the trials, as an emerging House, other Houses will seek to make alliance -- marriage alliances -- with House Baylor. Houses will be courting her, especially ones with more common abilities as genetics will lead to more powerful offspring. Nevada knows that Rogan loves her so why is he trying to pawn her off on other men and talking about genetic matches?

Let's sum it up. Power crazed grandmother - check. Ex-fiance hovering over your man - check. Dangerous trials for House status - check. Boyfriend making sure you understand your other "options" - check. And conspiracy trying to remove the annoying truthseeking who is mucking up their plans -- double check.

Nevada and Rogan have all the odds stacked against them, will they be able to emerge with their sanity and lives intact. And will they ever get to simply go on a date?

This is an exciting ending to the trilogy and although I would have like another series featuring just Nevada and Rogan, I am certain I will enjoy the spinoff just as much once it is released.

Ok, I'm going to go on record here with my prediction for Caesar's true identity:   Linus Duncan.  Because he is both the least likely and the most devastating.  Also, he's mentioned in earlier books and earlier in this book, that he dislikes being bored. (hide spoiler)   Of course, there would have to be a fourth book published in order to find out if I'm right, and that's not a given at this point.  Still it's fun to speculate.   There's a lot going on in this book - it's action packed and there are revelations galore, including finding out what Arabella actually is.  But even though it's a neck-and-neck race, I think I liked the second book better (White Hot).  The narrative felt smoother, more coherent.  Wildfire was just... chaotic.  Fun, highly entertaining chaos, but chaos.  And I really didn't like all that nonsense with Rynda, and I'm not convinced it was in any way necessary.  But I loved Zeus.  I'd have liked to have seen a lot more Zeus - and (Sergeant?) Teddy.  But mostly Zeus.     Here's hoping Avon will wake up and smell the coffee and a fourth book is just around the corner.

I would like to preface my review by saying that Ilona Andrews (well, technically Ilona and Andrew Gorden) is one of my favorite authors. Even though it hasn’t even been three months since White Hot came out, it felt like an absolute eternity waiting for this release. Luckily for me, I was on vacation when it released, and I happily pounced on my mail carrier when the delivery came. In case you were wondering, yes I did in fact read it in one sitting that night. Completely worth it.
I loved this series, and was sad about the thought of it ending. I’m happy to report though, that according to Ilona and Andrew Gordon during their AMA (Ask Me Anything) they hosted a couple of weeks ago…we may be seeing more of the Baylor crew, which is utterly fantastic in my mind. Basically the way it stands right now is its pretty dependent on the numbers. If the numbers are good, Avon will probably order at least one more book (if not more – possibly even focusing on Nevada’s sisters). Regardless of the numbers, we may still get one more novel out of our favorite duo, though it’ll be self-published if Avon doesn’t order more. Considering I’m not ready to let go of this series, I’ll take it and anything else they’re willing to give me!



Wildfire is the tumultuous conclusion to the Hidden Legacy series (well, sort of, see the paragraph above). On top of dealing with everything else going on in her life (registering as a House, tracking down the people behind the scenes, dealing with her grandmother, working out a relationship with Rogan) Nevada agrees to take on a missing person’s case…the twist? It’s Olivia Charles’ son-in-law. If that wasn’t complicated enough, his wife (the woman who brought the case to Nevada to begin with) is Rogan’s ex-fiancé (through arrangement more than choice). So needless to say the awkward meter is pretty high up on this one.
Rynda’s sudden reappearance into Rogan’s life forces Nevada to acknowledge just how serious her relationship is with him (and just how much he means to her). It really was the perfect catalyst; as the reader I didn’t feel too threatened by it (mostly because I’ve seen how much Rogan cares for Nevada, and can safely say that he’d never give that up), but Nevada did, which was the important factor here. I’ll admit that I got a little annoyed with Rynda, as she clearly saw Rogan as a backup, something I felt he deserved better than (plus she got over that plan quick enough, didn’t she?).
The actual introduction of the grandmother (whom formerly had been hinted at or seen through secondary manners) was fantastic. She was the perfect level of threatening and aristocratic (I kind of pictured her as the evil step-mother from Cinderella – anybody else?). Her determination was made pretty clear, though I’m not sure I agree with her methods (you get more flies with sugar, as the saying goes).
Nevada and her entire family are finally forced to make peace with and accept who and what they are, as well as all of the consequences that come along with that. This includes them registering as an official house (House Baylor, in case you weren’t sure). As it stands: Nevada, Catalina, Arabella, and Bernard all registered (I know, I wasn’t expecting that last one, based on all the build-up, but trust me, there’s a reason), but not Leon(more on that later).
Leon chose not to register, as mentioned above. Considering they’ve been hinting about his ability or lack thereof the whole series, this may come as a shock, but I actually respect his reasons for it. He’s decided that the best way to protect his family is to become a Dark Horse; the one in the family that remains unregistered. Usually this means they’re the ones that do the family’s dark deeds, which I think Leon is romanticizing more than he realizes. Only one way to find out I suppose (fingers crossed on that spin-off!).
On top of getting a name for Catalina’s ability (Siren, love it!) we’re finally allowed to find out what Arabella actually is, and man can I understand why they chose to keep that a secret. Based on history the Baylors had reason to be afraid of what would be done to her, should she be outed. Circumstances forced the issue on this one, but with Nevada, Rogan, and the entire City Justice department backing her up, things turned out ok in the end (so far – I can see how this alone would be a perfect plot for a spin off).
Another relevant point is the history of how their father was born. I won’t give it away, but it certainly raises some questions. Specifically about genealogy and how magic is passed down. Clearly all the calculations done by families over the years (to get the “perfect child”) aren’t fully accurate, if at all based on the new information given. Also, this fully secured Victoria Tremaine as a horrible person in my book.
Considering the length of the book, I sincerely can’t believe how much detail and information was crammed into it. I’ve barely skimmed the surface when you get right down to it. I highly recommend reading it (which, if you’ve read the first two you probably don’t need my push). Now I’m just going to sit here and cross my fingers for a follow-up novel or two…

Wildfire took me on a journey that was extremely fast-paced, filled with action, betrayal, romance, intrigue and a complicated plot. So well done!

What else can I say about Wildfire?
The character development is awesome.
The universe is completely set up.
I love Rogan. I also love Nevada. And Nevada's family.
I love all the magic!
And the intrigue.
As well as the fight scenes.
And the action, too.
Now this sounds like a poem. But I'm no poet, am I?

Wildfire is fast-paced. And it's so well done!
The storyline attractive, and I just want more.
Small secrets were revealed.
Some big ones as well.
And review still sounds like a poem. So I'll just go with it, then.

The writing is so good. Even better than most.
Some tidbits from Burn for Me have come back to haunt.
White Hot mystery is partially solved.
And still, Wildfire has left me hanging - and I want more!
I guess I wrote a poem for the Andrews.
Hopefully that unlocked more Hidden Legacy lore.


His brother Leon was just about his exact opposite. Lean, dark, and fast, Leon alternated between sarcasm, excitement, and total gloom as quickly as his sixteen-year-old boy could produce the hormones.

I walked to the window. Outside, the evening had birthed a night. The stars spread above us, glowing sparks of jewel fire against the velvet blackness. A hoard that was the envy of any dragon.

I crossed the street, punched the code into the lock, entered the office, and locked the door behind me. I had had one hell of a day. I had left my phone in my car, my gun in Rogan's car, and I had no underwear. Walking around without underwear felt odd. Being without my phone was even more odd.
