But I loved seeing all the characters come together and everything unfold.

I also managed to read the last book in the Starbound trilogy this week, and much like the second book I enjoyed it but not as much as I did These Broken Stars. This brings the series to a close and we have a new set of characters to fall in love with. Gideon and Sofia were adorable, and I shipped them so hard! They were just adorable, they made me want to say "snap out of it!" I also loved the reappearance of Tarver, Lilac, Lee and Chase, along with others from the first two books.
Once again, I found the snippets between the chapters to be confusing, probably even more so than the previous two books. Also, the whole thing with the Whispers just didn't do it for me and I found it pretty confusing. Despite this, I still really enjoyed this book - I struggled to put it down and there were moments that made me gasp out loud, which is always good when you're on a packed train in peak hour! On the whole, it was a satisfying conclusion

Gideon and Sofia were as interesting and compelling as the heroes in the previous books. I enjoyed the observations and deductions they each made, the way they understood each other so well in a sea of lies. I love the way Kaufman and Spooner write that makes it so easy to connect to their characters and to be drawn into their world.
I was only a little bit disappointed. Tarver fit into the story and brought out new aspects of both characters and of the story. And while Their Fractured Light needed all six characters together, wove them into the story elegantly with each chapter opening, it was also a little distracting. There were a few times after everyone was there where I lost track of who the "I" was in the chapter because other characters were talking or doing things for sections and I lost track.
I also wasn't a huge fan of the zombie section. Mindless and unstoppable obstacles aren't particularly interesting to me, like car chases. These were mostly used to drive the characters to one place and I liked that they served a purpose without dominating the story.

I had the chance to ask Amie and Meghan at a signing and their answer that it was the question to be asking and to wait for Their Fractured Light reassured me and got me excited about the series again. But I didn't really think Their Fractured Light addressed it. And while that was a bit disappointing, reading the whole series together there were so many other things I loved, I was invested and interested in, that it didn't bother me as much as it once would.
The chapter openings brought the whole series together almost brilliantly. Even in the story itself, so many threads from the other books and even from the novella come into play that makes it sooooo much fun. And I loved how it circumvented expectations. Also, in the end I adored Gideon and Sofia. They were exciting and fun to follow through this journey.

They also highlight the friendships and the love for friends that make us whole.
And from the inside, surrounded by the joy and devotion and loyalty of my friends, the shimmer of rage on the outside of our lives looks paper-thin.
I thought the authors did a great job bringing this story to it's climax. Once all 6 MCs were together, it got real. This was a very satisfying ending to a great series, which left me thinking about things -- which is a good thing.

Over the last year I have been amazed by the epicness of the Starbound series. I started with These Broken Stars at the beginning of the year and was just blown away. I laughed, I cried, and I didn't think any other book in the series could live up to it. I was kind of right. Book two, while also amazing, wasn't quite -as- good as the first. Still, I really loved the story and characters. Now it's on to book three and I was really hopeful for an amazing ending to an amazing series!
Their Fractured Light was kind of a unique book in the series. While both of the first two books were mostly focused on one couple, this one was very evenly split between a new romance and the two old ones. While this does appear to be Sofia and Gideon's story on the surface, it wasn't quite. Sofia and Gideon are the primary focus of about the first half of Their Fractured Light. Sofia is a con artist and Gideon is a hacker and they are honestly adorable together. Unfortunately, I didn't connect with them on the same level as I did Lilac and Tarver, or even Jubilee and Flynn.
I think my primary issue with Sofia and Gideon is that they didn't have nearly as much time to grow to love each other. It seemed that they went very quickly from completely distrusting each other and never planning to see each other again to being in love. It just wasn't quite believable enough for me. That being said, they both had very interesting backstories and were very sympathetic characters. I also enjoyed how their stories connected to the other books in the series.
The final installment of the Starbound series nicely wraps up the mystery of the whispers. I really enjoyed reliving certain aspects of the first two books in the series from the whispers' perspective. I hadn't anticipated coming to care very much about the whispers as characters, but that's exactly what ended up happening.
Obviously all four characters from the earlier books were present in the last half of this book and I loved ever second of having them back! My biggest disappointment after reading These Broken Stars was not having Tarver and Lilac in the books, but they were a huge part of this one, and it was amazing! Lilac's relationship to the whispers is a major plot point in this one and it was super interesting to see how that all played out.
This book is action start to finish (so basically like the other two). There were a few lags that really slowed down the reading for me, but the abundance of action made up for those. The mission to destroy LaRoux Industries and the man at the helm was a big part of the story and the main point that brings Sofia and Gideon together. LaRoux has been such a villain from the beginning of the series, so it was obviously great to see someone go after him with a vengeance!
One of the things I really liked was getting to explore the amazing city on the planet of Corinth. I honestly can't quite picture it in my head, but it sounds incredible! There's an upper city and a lower city and it kind of reminds me of The Fifth Element, but I wish I had a picture! Fan art, anyone?
Overall, I thought this was a great end to the series and it wrapped everything up in such an amazing, interconnected way! My main complain is the way the relationship between Sofia and Gideon was sped up to the point of not being believable. Although neither of the subsequent books lived up to These Broken Stars, this was a completely amazing, incredibly unique series! I'm not normally a huge fan of sci-fi, but these books made me a believer! The Starbound trilogy is definitely a must-read and I recommend it to basically every reader I know!

This entire series was phenomenal. The characters were some of the best developed that I have ever seen. The setting and storyline were so unique. This is easily one of my favorite YA series. Initially, I wasn't sure how having three separate sets of protagonists throughout the series would impact the overall progression and continuity of the storyline, but it was done so in a way that ensured the reader was not overwhelmed. And by only switching between two points-of-view in each book, it was very hard to get confused. Protagonists from previous books played large parts in this final installment, but everything was told from either Gideon or Sofia's viewpoint, which definitely helped during scenes where there was a lot going on. By the way, how great are these character names?! Lilac LaRoux, Tarver Merendsen, Flynn Cormac, Jubilee Chase, Gideon Marchant, and Sofia Quinn. After completing the series, they all have distinct physical and personality traits in my mind, like I can almost see them. That, my friends, is excellent writing.
The narration for all three of these books was great, as well. Especially for the parts involving the "Whispers". The narration and sound effects really enhanced the story's power. ~The Audiobookworm

The Starbound series has been phenomenal and one of my favourite young adult series to date. Each installment introducing readers to a new couple of unlikely partners who form bonds and both having been touched by the devastation LaRoux Industries has inflected upon their worlds. Using deception and her cunning, Sofia can swindle her way into any situation, having shifted around between worlds since her father was killed. She certainly won't let her guard down for Gideon, the computer hacker that now has her on the run. Gideon has his own vendetta and through chance, the two reluctantly join forces.
Gideon is not only a hacker but a notorious keyboard warrior, keeping his online identity a mystery. Sofia wants more than to bring down the LaRoux empire and neither Sofia or Gideon can trust one another, keeping their own secrets of lies and deception. As the storyline progresses, the reader is reintroduced to the characters of previous installments, Lilac, Tarver, Jubilee and Flynn. It becomes apparent that LaRoux is on the verge of world domination and the team of unlikely heroes must find a way to coincide and save humanity.
Although I enjoyed their intense attraction, I felt Sofia and Gideon were more engaging as individuals and seemed to lose their identity once the romantic aspects of their partnership were introduced. Neither felt as developed as previous characters in the series. It isn't until the latter half of Their Fractured Light where the intensity increases tenfold. LaRoux Industries and the Whispers that were introduced in These Broken Stars are being used as a weapon against those on Corinth, before introducing the technology that ensures compliance to the rest of civilisation.
Suffice to say, the finale crescendo is absolutely epic. I gasped, laughed inappropriately, swooned, and felt the gauntlet of emotions before settling on utter contentment. Like previous installments, the storyline was intricate and beautifully paced. The world building is immaculate and vividly imagined, placing the reader among the stars with our young group of heroes. Even told in dual points of view, the chapters are seamless and show what remarkable authors both Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner truly are. Not many authors could create such a wildly imagined and beautiful series, that is also relatable through it's utterly charming and ragtag characters. The partnership they've formed is a forced to be reckoned with.
An epic finale to what has been not only a beautifully written, but incredibly engaging and lovingly created series. Although I would have liked to have seen deeper character development of both Sofia and Gideon, I loved it regardless. The Starbound trilogy is without a doubt, one of, if not the best young adult science fiction series to date.
