Like last time, multiple characters are introduced this time once again. Now that in itself might’ve not have been a bad thing if you can show me the sense of purpose the majority of them should have, but at this point, it’s seemingly done to stretch out the plot for the final book rather than actually making all the characters as relevant as I would’ve liked. Of course, I’m not saying that all of them aren’t relevant, but the majority are mostly filling that “I’m here to do this very minor thing before you won’t even hear from me for a hundred pages” spot, which sucks because some of these historical figures are still and will always be way more interesting than Josh and Sophie Newman.
Tbh Sophie isn’t even that bad, she’s just fading away in comparison to how she was in the previous books while her brother is getting more pronounced. Which shouldn’t be an issue because he should get his own chance to shine, no, the issue here is that Josh is incredibly pathetic and deluded that it’s hard for me to ever want to see the kid in anything but a coffin or some portal where he’s stuck somewhere and I don’t have to listen to him get brainwashed like an idiot over and over again without a chance of becoming a better character than he used to be. I haven’t liked him from the start, I know, but this is just a ridiculous development for someone who is easily becoming the more relevant one of the twins.
As always though, my absolute favourite thing happens to be the historical and mythological characters and the research I can conduct on them whenever I find a name I don’t know much about. Thankfully, there haven’t been way too many because this would’ve made the book too difficult to get through with how many names get thrown around, but again, I always enjoy the chance to learn about interesting things which Michael Scott provided in a way for me.
Plot wise we’ve finally moved on from the trend of having the twins learn an element to actually shed even more light on the world Michael Scott tried to build and Danu Talis in particular. That part of the book was one of my favourite parts because it finally started connecting the dots of why some of the things that happened, happened and where we might go from here. Like everything else in this book however, this favourite thing isn’t without its kinks because it shows how much of a train wreck this is going to end up in book 6. Regardless I still really enjoyed finally learning about some of this stuff and seeing some of the previously mentioned names finally appear and get a spotlight.
Despite my issues with the series, I’m still interested in seeing how it ends and if they ever make a movie out of this series, then I honestly don’t think it need more than 2 or three movies tops to summarize the whole thing without leaving anything relevant out of it.
