The title of this book is appropriate, as we learn about the roots of Riley's rogue movement, and tons about the rogue life. Most of the book is simply the Rogues trying to stay one step ahead of Talon, one step ahead of St. George, and essentially, trying to stay alive. Therefore, we are part of many chases, battles, and narrow escapes. Portions of the book also go back in time, to reveal the impetus for Riley's Talon defection. I always love a good back story, and we learn a little more about Riley in the process. I think the flashbacks allowed me to understand him, and why he is the way he is. Kagawa also planted a seed, that there is a lot more going on between St. George and Talon than meets the eye. And so, the plot thickens.
Dragons, dragons fighting, humans fighting, lies, deceit, and a love triangle. Loved it!

I read Talon back in August after seeing Rogue's beautiful self lining the shelves basically everywhere. While I did enjoy Talon a lot, I had kind of a hard time with the contemporary setting. I usually like to keep my fantasy firmly in Fantasyland. I think that's the reason that I enjoyed Rogue even more. While the second book is still set firmly in the 21st century, it has a much more fantastic feel.
All of the characters continue to be pretty awesome in this book and, most importantly, there's a lot more of Cobat. This book, as its name might suggest, focuses heavily on Cobalt and his backstory. We learn about his time in Talon, how he became a rogue dragon, and how he came to be teamed up with Wes. I tend to get a little irritated with excessive flashbacks and I'll admit that did happen here a time or two as I got more invested in the present-day story. Still, I did enjoy getting to know more about Cobalt!
The love triangle is going strong in Rogue and it honestly irritated me a bit at times. While I understand that Ember is a dragon and has different ways and emotions than a normal human would, I couldn't quite get on board with her constant back and forth between Garret and Cobalt. Her actions were, frankly, confusing at times. Maybe that was intentional though, since Ember was going through some confusing things.
One of the things I really enjoyed about Rogue vs. Talon was that this book had a lot less shopping trips and a lot more action. From start to finish, the group is on the run from both Talon AND St. George and they can never be quite sure who to trust. There are tons of miscommunications and half-truths that add to the already dramatic plot. Ember really shows her Viper skills a few times and basically proves that she's a total badass who can probably take care of her self (and those around her) just fine. Still, she isn't afraid to let the men in her life step in when she needs help, which is something I can definitely respect.
The Talon series is really my first dragon series and I am in love with the uniqueness of this story! I am dying to read part three and see what comes of this (sometimes ridiculous) love triangle! As I've already pointed out, this book was a lot less teeny-bopper and a lot more all action all the time. I highly recommend this series, at least based on what I've read so far.

This is the second book in the Talon series. I read this very shortly after finishing the first book in the series which was excellent. This book continues to follow the young dragon Ember with the addition of some chapters in the point of view or her brother Dante, which was exciting.
I really enjoyed seeing the situation from the point of view of both of the twins because you can see how the people surrounding them and the information that they are given really affects their point of view, as well as their actions.
The swift pace continues with this book, even when there is a moment of calm, Ember manages to turn it into a wild chase! The feel of this book was very different from the first one, which I liked. While Talon was more based out of one area, Rogue really draws you in to the 'on-the-run' atmosphere.
The romantic plot line was a little disappointing to me, but as I've mentioned before, I'm not a fan of love triangles. They always seem to have so much melodrama. As far as love triangles go, however, this one wasn't terrible.
I am very excited to read the next book, particularly with a cliff hanger like this book had!

Rogue was filled with action, fights and deep betrayal. Following four characters, it was fast paced and a quite quick read.

It's a suicide mission, but Riley refuses to let Ember infiltrate The Order compound and free the soldier alone. Riley, who is portrayed as once a fierce hunter, now a revolutionary freedom fighter amongst his kind, is reduced to following a teen girl just hoping for a shred of returned affection. And Ember isn't all that remarkable, never mind being in love with someone else. Comparing the two love interests is akin to being offered chocolate... Or bread and water. Garret's only attraction is that he is classed as the forbidden choice being a former soldier who hunted dragons. He may be seeking redemption, but his character is as exciting as watching paint dry. Riley is clearly the winner here, and fingers crossed that common sense prevails.
But as entertaining and well written as I find the Talon series, there is something lacking that sets it apart from other young adult titles. Although there is a few instances of dragon warfare, sadly not enough to keep me interested. I did enjoy the banter from Riley, but with Garret possibly being made from cardboard, it was mostly one sided.
It's actually an entertaining and quick read that builds nicely on Talon. With her dragon obsessed Twitter feed I had thought, who better than to create a fantasy dragon based series than Julie Kagawa. But sadly it doesn't have the same heart and grunt as her previous releases, namely the Blood of Eden series and it appears to be one that has failed to live up to the hype for me.
