Luke, a stage director, aged 45, is going through his deceased grandmother's (Constance's) belongings and finds letters from Jessica spanning fifteen years and ending a month previously. Jessica, 45 years younger than Constance, was a successful actress until she was injured in a train crash and left with a limp. She then became a book illustrator. Luke falls in love with her through her letters, finds out she's living in Seattle and intends to introduce himself as Constance's grandson. However, finding her limping, silver-haired and old for her years he backs off, but returns, speaks to her and finds they are mutually attracted. She refuses a part in his next play, but plans to direct one in which her friend Hermione will star. Hermione quits, leaving Jessica to star on the opening night and Luke sees the Jessica of her letters...
