She Walks in Power is a fascinating blend of adventure, romance, and spiritual warfare with a Robin Hood flair.
As Protector of the Spear, Alexia has honed her archery skills to the point she is able to shoot and pretty much never miss. Although she has been trained well in the Scriptures and has the gift of discerning of spirits, when her emotions control her, she becomes blind to things that she should have seen. Unfortunately for her, though fortunately for us so we have an interesting story, her emotions do lead her more than they should and she manages to make a few mistakes with far-reaching consequences.
Ronar is very interesting. The sins of his youth and the guilt he carries as a result lead him to live a life of seeking atonement. He has even named his horse Penance, most likely as a constant reminder of his life's aim. He is confounded when he meets Alexia, having never met anyone quite like her. He is appalled when he learns that Alexia actually knows Scripture. The things that she quotes and believes have him calling her a heretic. I love how he was so torn between doing his duty for the king and protecting Alexia.
There are mysteries surrounding both these characters and as Ronar seeks the very spear Alexia is entrusted to protect, I was kept guessing and was surprised at the revelations made. There were some twists and I didn't expect the story to end as it did and yet in reflecting back, it was better than my imagined ending.
Spiritual truths season this story and the realities of spiritual warfare are portrayed in a dramatic way. Not in a scary Frank Peretti way, though. Whew!
The ending was complete enough to be satisfying and yet had plenty of hints that there is more to come. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series which will release soon, probably July from what I have heard.
I won't say the story was perfect. A few things were improbable and one even quite impossible. However, this is fiction intended for enjoyment and I did very much enjoy it very much!
If you like high adventure in your stories, with sword fights, dramatic escapes, and characters seeking after God, this is a must-read.
