This is Orwell's record of a period in the late 1920s when he lived among the tramps of London and Paris. Orwell's publishers initially took the book as a sign of him abandoning Socialism, but this was denied by the author himself. The book attempts to offer insights, rather than solutions.

George Orwell is one of the greatest writers I've ever had the pleasure of reading works from, with every book of his I read, I fall in love with his writing a little bit more and this was absolutely no exception. Orwell was very genuine in his writing, with his empathy for the poor and his leftist views and it really radiates through this book, his sensitivity towards these subjects but he portrayed them so well.
