This was Tessa Bickers debut novel and boy did the synopsis get me. A book lovers pick where two people begin a relationship of exchanging classic books with annotations to each other not knowing a single thing about the person.
The beginning of the book was a little bit all over the place for the reader. You are just introduced to Erin, who has recently quit her job because she didn’t love it and has recently lost a close friend to cancer. For her, this is a new start. The dilemma comes into play when she realizes that her favorite copy with annotations of To Kill a Mockingbird is gone. She soon finds out that she had donated it while getting rid of stuff. Hence starts the relationship between Erin and James and the book swap. James is the lucky man who picks up Erin’s book at the local library and starts a chain reaction of annotating her book with his comments and asking her to meet him in the next book.
This premise was incredibly intriguing for a person who loves to read. However, it really just fell flat from there. We only really get snippets of the book discussion and rather the author decides to focus on the past the two main characters actually have.
A lot of the backstory/background was fairly dull and was just a hodgepodge of filler. As a reader, I wanted the author to dive into this character/relationship building in a different way rather than taking the easy way out and simply stating that they already had a past together.
Great idea, just didn’t have the home run I was a looking for.
