When I started 'Nimona' I wasn't sure what to make of it. The art style took a while to get used to, and the story started out with 'Nimona' as an annoying Teen. Slowly but surely though, 'Nimona' burrowed its way in to my head and I found myself enjoying it more and more. It has so much heart, and depth, and has such a beautiful message that I couldn't help but find myself swept up in the story. Nimona turns from annoying Teen to a strong protagonist; and the subtext of good vs. evil was done perfectly!
Overall 'Nimona' was a fun, simple and uplifting read. I certainly recommend it.
Initial thought: I call my latest foray into graphic novels with Nimona a success! Nimona was so entertaining and brought some fresh ideas to the table. The modern pseudo-medieval setting allowed Noelle Stevenson a lot of liberties which she fully explored with regards to knighthood, villainy and science. Some elements reminded me of other fictional works but the integration of them give rise to a creative story in Nimona that challenged more than a few clichés.
The start of this comic was so funny, cute, quirky, and lovely. Sadly the latter half didn't live up to the former. There was not enough time spent on the strengths of the comic; the relationships between the characters and the humour. Nimona starts off so fresh and original, but in the end collapses under genre tropes, an overarching plot that felt done before, and a rather unsatisfying ending.
Would definitely have been better with more shark jokes.
