Heroes & Heartbreakers's Anticipated Books of 2019A total disaster? Or the start of something special?
Kailyn Flowers always believed she was calm and controlled . . . that is, until she ended up sprawled all over Daxton Hughes, the former actor she totally crushed on as a teenager. Kailyn was mortified - not quite the meet cute she had always dreamed of - but Daxton unexpectedly sought her friendship as a result . . . only to heartlessly betray her soon afterwards.
Eight years later, Dax needs Kailyn's help. Years of anger towards him haven't exactly left Kailyn inclined to oblige, but she also isn't heartless enough to refuse. She vows to be friendly, but soon their 'friendly' meetings turn into flirty dinner dates, and Kailyn can feel their chemistry is as explosive as ever. But how can she possibly let down her guard again to a guy who has heartbreak written all over him?

Again, gotta mention the lying trope being here, and not being a fan of that, but I absolutely loved everything else (characters - especially were top notch here!)

I struggled with this one. I had a difficult time with Kailyn, I guess you could say that I had a like/dislike relationship with her. Her grudge against Dax and her initial motivations were difficult for me to stomach. So, I had a hard time liking her at all.
As she got to know Dax and his sister Emme, she certainly grew on me.
Overall, I failed to connect with Meet Cute in the same ways I normally do with Hunting's other books.

The story picks up several years later when both are successful lawyers and Kailyn ends up handling the trust for his little sister after their parents are unexpectedly killed. Of course, forcing Kailyn and Dax into close proximity means they inevitably end up rehashing old events and rekindling their old chemistry. There's a lot of things I wasn't expecting about Meet Cute that I really enjoyed. I loved how there was an important focus for both Dax and Kailyn on their careers and it wasn't just a side detail (although it did seem a little improbable that they'd both be up for partner at their law firm before the age of 30). It dealt quite a lot with grief, especially for Dax's 13 year old sister Emily who is caught in the middle of all of the legal drama. Her relationship with both Dax as her brother and Kailyn as her conservator is explored, and she felt like an essential part of their relationship and story and not just a vehicle for them to get back together. There was a (rather predictable) villain but overall it was a story about family and a bit of legal drama too which was a unique twist for romance novel.
Overall: A fun, intense romance novel with less of a focus on the couple and more on the family situation surrounding them made for a nice change of pace. This review was originally posted on Girl in the Pages
