The opening chapter of this book is such a mix of dark and light. The dark - Stella's mother and the way she treats her. The light - the boy she met in the stairwell, who gave her enough light to get her through that day. Fast forward 5 years, and things have only become worse for Stella. Her toxic family is extinguishing any life force that she possesses. I felt sympathy for Stella immediately and I kept hoping she could get out from under her mother and sister's abuse. She flees her home and we meet Sam and his awesome family. Just when you think all is well -- BAM! The paranormal kicks in and this some weird paranormal stuff. It was actually sort of twisted and sometimes quite horrifying. However, I found myself going back for more, because my curiosity was piqued. In the end, I read some odd stuff, but I also got a love story, where there was love on several levels (romantic, familial, friendship), and I was entertained.
