Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow is a retelling of the fairy tale East of the Sun and West of the Moon, one of my favorite fairy tales.

I feel like there are a couple ways to write a novel-length fairy tale: stick closely to the original tale in style and content or reinvent the tale, straying from the original material. This book really plants itself in the first category, so much so that it reads exactly like a fairy tale - the writing is very (almost too) simplistic, characters are static and undeveloped, and things flow very inorganically and without evoking much emotion (stemming from the author relying on telling rather than showing, maybe).

But the book, like its fairy tale, certainly is transporting. I really feel like I felt cold reading it, and it does a good job painting the icy, Norwegian winter.

It’s a nice read and a lovely retelling, but it doesn’t have that stick-to-your-heart kind of feel.

An enchanting fairytale, where animals talk, trolls cast enchantment spells on bears and young girls with no name aren't afraid to stand up for whats right.

Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow was an interesting read and not having delved into many folk or fairytales, I wasn't sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. It was wonderfully told, the world building was beautiful, from the small cabin where Lass lives, to the stark ice castle that she now calls home and everything in between. Considering Lass was born into borderline impoverished conditions, her sense of wonder and adventure were enchanting and I found myself invested in her story and the world around her.

At times I found myself wondering where on earth this fable retelling would take me, but it was impossible to put down. It was ridiculously entertaining. My only complaint is the cover, it's not among the worst I've seen, but when most of us are guilty of cover lust, it really doesn't represent how enchanting the story actually is. I would love to see something whimsy, dreamlike and artistic. A cover worthy of a magical fairytale.

I really like this book. The heroine is clever and kind, and very strong if not the traditional sort of warrior heroine that I'm a total sucker for.

If you're a fan of retellings of old fairy tales or folk stories, I think you would find this book quite enjoyable.
