The first time I read Dead of Winter was in 2018, and now in 2022, I’m doing a reread of the series since the last book will release soon. Dead of Winter wasn’t my favorite in the series. I knew why after rereading it a second time. I have a thing about not liking love triangles, and this book/series has a love triangle. I know some readers love Jack, but I’m more of a fan of Aric. This review will explain why I love Aric more than Jack without spoiling the story. 

Storyline/My Thoughts: First, I’m going to say I’m a die-hard Kresley Cole fan. I am enjoying her Young Adult Fantasy/Dystopian (The Arcana Chronicles) series, especially rereading it. I distaste, though, when there is a love triangle in the story, which I’ve already stated above. So, for readers who don’t like love triangles, you are forewarned ahead of time. Why do I dislike love triangles? Because the FMC can never decide who she wants to be with, I would rather her choose in the beginning or just choose both. Kresley, can this be a Reverse Harem story, and can she have both? Please. Okay, if not, please have her choose the right one, which I believe after reading this story is Aric (Death). I know I will get heat for saying that, but I was not too fond of Jack in this book. He is keeping secrets, and yes, I know Aric is doing the same, but it’s evident that Aric is protective of her. Jack can’t even keep his word about not putting himself in danger, which drove me crazy in the book. 

Don’t get me wrong; I loved the banter between Jack and Death when they finally met in this book. Evie, though, couldn’t stand them fighting over her. Girl, you made them fight over you? 

If you read the previous book, Dead of Winter picks up from that book where Evie has to save Jack from the twins who are known as the Lovers. She leaves Aric after he tries to coerce her into something she didn’t want to do in the first place. That scene from the previous book ticked me off with Death, but he realized he messed up, and he’s trying to redeem himself in this book. After Evie does rescue, Jack is when Death/Aric arrives at the camp and tries to win her over again. He will do anything to prove to her they are supposed to be together, even put up with Jack. The Lovers have tortured Jack, and Evie knows he will never tell her what happened to him or even his half-sister, Clotile. She knows what happened to Jack was terrible, and after rescuing him, the Huntress, Selena, is taken by the Lovers. The issue is everyone thought the Lovers were killed when they rescued Jack; unfortunately, the Lovers have a big secret that Evie and her team of friends find out about in this book. I thought, The Hermit, The Hierophant, and The Devil were all evil. No, the Lovers, the twins, are much worst. Readers will learn a lot about the twins in this book, and none of it is good. They are the Arcana Cards that Evie will be forced to unalive and not ally with because they have revenge on their minds from previous lives, and they have it out for the Empress and anyone who allies with her. Holy moly, they were twisted. Kresley writes complex characters who can either be lovable or crazy, which you must hate. The Lovers are those you have to hate. 

The third book primarily focused on rescuing Jack or Selena from the Lovers and the banter between the two males with Evie. Yes, I learned more about the Lovers, but I wanted to learn more about the other Arcana cards out there. We got some of the Priestess (Circe) in a small part, and then the Emperor showed up towards the end of this book, but not much else. There were other questions raised in this book, too, that I need to be answered. Why won’t Death tell Evie about all her powers he wants her to unlock? Why does he want her to unleash her Red Witch? There’s also Jack and why he keeps things from Evie. Is he an Arcana card, too? So many questions need to be answered, and it seemed the most significant focus of this book was the issue of the love triangle and the Lovers, which I stated already. It drove me crazy with the love triangle. I still enjoyed the storyline in certain parts. 

Kresley knows how to suck me into her stories continuously, and there’s no returning to the real world until I finish her books. Her writing style, creative storylines, and addicting characters don’t help with my reading addition to her books. I read her Immortals After Dark series several times, and now I’m rereading her YA series. That should tell you right there; I love her books. Her books are comforting, even when they drive me crazy, and I need answers, especially with the Arcana Chronicles. 

If you have not read these books and are thinking about starting them, I highly recommend listening to them. Emma Galvin is one of my favorite narrators. She brings the story and the characters to life and gives the characters accents; for example, Jack is Cajun, and I love the accent she gives him.  

This book may not be my favorite in the series since it only received 3.5 stars from me, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t like certain aspects of the story. I love each character differently: the good ones, not the twisted ones, like the Lovers. I will have nightmares over them for Jack and Selena and what the twins put them through in this book. 

Standalone or Part of Series: It’s part of The Arcana Chronicles, and I highly recommend reading in order.

Есть такие книги, которые бесят тебя каждым предложением, каждым словом, буквой. Все в них не так: бесящие герои, нелогичное поведение всех персонажей подряд, странное развитие сюжета и мерзкая любовная линия. Читаешь и хочется вырвать себе все волосы на голове. Но… но читаешь, не бросаешь. А почему? Потому что есть в них что-то цепляющее, что-то что удерживает внимание и заставляет браться за каждую последующую книгу. Вот именно такой серией меня является «Хроники Аркан». Искренне ненавижу эту серию, но также страстно обожаю.

Жила была у нас девочка Эванджелина Грин. Красивая, легкомысленная и счастливая. Но была у Эви тайна: сумасшедшая бабушка, которая велела ей убивать и странные галлюцинации и видения, которые порой посещали девушку. Но все бы ничего, героиня могла бы смириться с этим, спрятать все переживания и просто плыть по течению. Бороться с искушением, которое вызывает в ней таинственный новичок Джек, пытаться понять что она испытывает к своему парню Брэндону, но тут случается ужасное, а именно невероятная солнечная вспышка, превратившая мир в руины и пепел. Растения, животные, люди гибнут в всепожирающем пламени. Много чего еще произойдет с девушкой, прежде чем ее найдет таинственный и немного сумасшедший Дурак, прежде чем она отправится в приключение наполненное смертью, усталостью и борьбой за выживание. Вот почему я действительно уважаю и продолжаю читать серию так это за идею, уникальную мифологию. Кресли Коул умело смешивает постапокалипсис и темное, мрачное фэнтези, создавая новый уникальный мир, наполненный магией, приключениями и смертельной опасностью на каждом шагу.

У нас есть группа избранных людей, которые перерождаются раз в несколько сотен лет, чтобы по воле Богов сыграть в смертельную игру – Битву Арканов. Каждой игре предшествует катастрофа мирового масштаба.

Каждую игру она посвящена теме одной из карт. Черная смерть была намеком на меня (Смерть). Извержение вулкана, уничтожившее целые города, было намеком на Императора.

Каждому игроку соответствует определенная Карта Таро, которая определяет его историю, способности и само естество.

Одного из них ждет победа и бессмертие, другие падут, а их души будут ждать следующего перерождения. Казалось бы, с одной стороны, в чем проблема? Не играйте, игнорируйте игру и все будут счастливы, но все не так уж просто. Арканы страдают неким раздвоением личности: одна личность, это их человеческая сущность, а вторая суть Аркана, которая в большинстве случаев побеждает и порабощает человеческое начало. Сущности Аркана коварны, жадны и Игра для них смысл жизни. Сопротивляться их желанию уничтожать друг другу практически невозможно. Невероятно интересно наблюдать за противостоянием игроков на фоне гибнущего, разрушенного мира, где обычные, смертные люди представляют не меньшую опасность. Здесь вам и зомби, новые неизвестные болезни, люди потерявшие человечность и Арканы, большинство из которых лишены малейших моральных принципов. Атмосфера серии очень мрачная и наполненная настоящей жестокостью буквально завораживает. Как читателю мне было невероятно интересно наблюдать за событиями, развивающемуся отношениями между героями. Отношения между Арканами моя любимая тема - их союзы, недоверие друг к другу, ненависть, любовь и дружба, столько чувств в таком ужасающем мире. Здесь каждый Игрок находится в постоянных сомнениях и опасности, боится позволить себе малейшие чувства, ведь победитель может быть лишь один, а значит никому нельзя доверять.

Любители аниме согласятся со мной, что перед прочтением так и становится перед глазами картинка. Красочная, яркая, атмосферная.

Как пример я бы привела аниме «Судьба. Начало», есть что-то в этих двух историях схожее. В общей канве, мрачности, историях персонажей и переплетении историй.

А теперь, почему я НЕНАВИЖУ эту серию книг.

В первых двух книгах все было прекрасно, да были моменты, которые раздражали и казались неуместными, но на все эти недостатки легко можно было закрыть глаза. Но в «Разгаре зимы», автор вдруг приправила историю такой дозой любовный разборок, что мне просто хотело застрелиться. Нельзя было не прочитать страницу без разборок мужиков и их переживаний по поводу того, кого из них любит их ненаглядная Эви. Арик и Джек на протяжении ВСЕЙ книги спорят и устраивают словесные разборки.

— Мой пистолет, твой череп, Смерть. Я тебя предупреждал, — он впился в меня безумным взглядом, – ты с ним спала?
— Что? Нет!
...
Абсолютно спокойно он спросил:
— Ты хоть понимаешь, какое это удовольствие прикасаться к ней после столь долгой разлуки? Ради этого блаженства я не устрашусь пули. Я приму пулю.
Я отодвинулась от Арика, и он разочарованно вздохнул.
— Вот чем ты занималась в доме Смерти? — с упрёком спросил Джек. — Ты позволяла ему касаться себя? А после этого еще и танцевала для него?

….

— Она отвергает ухаживания нас обоих, смертный, — Арик прислонился головой к стене, — пока не сделает выбор в мою пользу.

….

— Ты серьёзно считаешь, что она отдаст предпочтение тебе? Imbécile!
— Даже не сомневаюсь.

И ТАК ВСЯ КНИГА! Господи, я впервые в жизни действительно НЕНАВИДЕЛА любовную составляющую в книге и пролистывала эти страницы с невероятным раздражением. Зачем Кресли, зачем? Неужели вам неизвестно что такое чувство меры?

И ладно мужики, но Эви же в свою очередь тоже постоянно предается размышлениям о том, кого она любит больше (а любит она двоих сразу, естественно), кого она выберет и кого оставит (она не хочет выбирать, это такой тяжелый выбор). Один герой из ее прошлого, муж и сужденный, к другому тянется ее человеческая сущность. Один умный, богатый и вообще ПРЫНЦ, а второй дерзкий, решительный и так манит ее.

Я перевела взгляд на Джека. Сколько бы времени я ему не дала, как бы он ни старался, он никогда сможет добиться того же, что и Арик. Я была почти уверена, что в эту минуту Джек пришёл к тому же выводу.

И да, вы же знаете, как я ненавижу, когда в книге превозносят одну единственную героиню? Выставляя ее единственной в своем роде, подчеркивают что она самая умная, красивая и воинственная.

Я же говорил, что меня воспитали воином, но также я увлекался науками, и в этом моя избранница должна быть со мной схожа. Квинтэссенция могла бы читать со мной книги, но она не воин. Селена – вся из себя воительница, но не интеллектуалка, — он провёл пальцем по моей щеке, — я не хотел влюбляться в тебя, считая, что это меня погубит. Я противился этому всей своей сущностью, но никто не мог сравниться с тобой в ярости, храбрости и остроте ума.
— Ярости? Я ведь не хочу больше ни с кем сражаться.
— Но, если обстоятельства вынуждают, ты борешься до победы. Когда я пленил тебя, какой гениальный план ты провернула без всякой подготовки, чтобы уничтожить меня и моих союзников.
...
Ну, правда, неужели ты можешь представить Селену, читающую со мной? Или Квинтэссенцию, отрезающую себе палец, чтобы сбежать от меня?
Милая, добродушная Тесс в такой ситуации забилась бы в рыданиях. Лучницу посиделки в кабинете Смерти привели бы в бешенство, она бы зашвырнула книгу в дальний угол, и вляпалась бы в очередное дерьмо.
Возможно, мы с Ариком были созданы друг для друга.

О плиз, ну что за дерьмо? Почему другая девушка не может быть красивой, умной и воином одновременно? Серьезно? Почему только Эви у нас такая охренительная? Селена восхитительна, она куда более интересная героиня, но нет, Эви – богиня, собирательница лучших мужиков, и это при том, что она периодически невыносимо глупа, эгоистична и нагла.

Так же поражает, как Эви все слушаются, как ярчайший пример:
Эви: «Мы идем спасать Джека».
Все: «Но мы не хотим, он нам никто»
Эви» «Но я его люблю, поэтому вы все идете со мной, рискуете своими шкурами, но спасаете Джека».
Все: «Да, Эви».

Окееей.

Собственно о героях. «Хроники Аркан» полны множества самых разнообразных, харизматичных героев. Все персонажи разные, самобытные. Воинственная Селена (моя любимица), отчужденный Смерть, легкий на подъем Финн, загадочный Мэтью (безумно люблю малыша). А также в «Разгаре зимы» во всей своей кровавой и жестокой красе предстают Любовники. Вот люблю я таких злодеев, ярких, беспощадных, таинственных, Любовники у мадам Коул вышли на диво прекрасными и яркими, браво за них.

По итогу, прекрасная идея и мир, но испорченные какими-то ненужными любовными потугами, чрезмерными любовными страдашками и разборками, которые нужно максимально выпилить из сюжета. Прочитала что там произошло в следующей книги и просто Poker Face. Аааааа, зачем!?

PS: конец разбил мое сердце, ну вот как так можно было поступить с этим то героем, а? Ну вот кого угодно, а этого персонажа не прощу.

I liked this one, but a little less then the earlier ones. Even though there is a lot of action, I dislike how much time the main character keeps moaning over TWO guys.. I was really irritated by her, just make a choice and move on, you can 't love both. I hope the next one will be better!!

I’ve really enjoyed this series since I started listening to Poison Princess two years ago (I was late to the party, but that ended up working in my favor). This has been an exciting dystopian following Evie and the other Arcana as they learn more about their powers and play the game until there is only one left (I feel like I should see Christopher Lambert or Adrian Paul saying “There can be only one.” many times in this series. LOL).

This story picks up pretty much where the previous book ends. Evie is going after Jack, she is going to save him from The Lovers before their torture drives him mad. She snuck away in the night from Aric (Death). When she gets back to the camp, she learns he has made quite the name for himself. Several of the Arcana are getting along quite well there, thanks to Matthew.

Here’s where the story goes all wrong and finally starts to read like the YA story that it is. Aric shows up and Evie can’t decide who she is in love with, Jack or Aric. Yep, the dreaded love triangle of YA has reared its ugly head. The majority of this story is the three of them on a mission to save The Archer from The Lovers. OMG, the angst. It is big in this one. Evie goes back and forth several times. Jack and Aric are at each other’s throats. It is everything I hate about YA. Yeah.

All of that being said, I still have enjoyed this series. We did learn more about other Arcana. There is still some good action. We even get to meet some new Arcana. It was just such a small amount and was overshadowed by the love triangle that it makes me very disappointed in this story. Oh, and to top all of that, it ends on a big ol’ cliffhanger (hence why I waited so long to listen to this book. I waited until we got close to the next book’s release. See why coming late to this party worked in my favor.). I do plan to listen to book four when it is released, however, if it doesn’t go back to more of the first two book storyline and less love triangle type angst, I’m done.

Narration
Emma Galvin continues to do a bang up job with the narration of this series. I love her voice of Matthew, who is hard to follow with his weird incoherent babble. I thought she did a great job voicing Jack with his Cajun accent. I loved her voice of Aric too. I think she is one of the main reasons I was able to finish this story. If I were just reading the book, I probably would’ve set it down and walked away.

I had assumed that Dead of Winter was the final book in the The Arcana Chronicles, but it wasn't until I reached the cliffhanger that I'd realised there's yet another book to come. Most readers have a guilty pleasure read, a series that featured the typically beautiful girl who had it all, the strong and slightly dimwitted love interest and the dashing and handsome third party that was determined to steal her away. Normally I'd keep my distance, but the premise of having a group of seemingly normal teens, all representing a card in an ancient tarot deck was just too tempting. The previous two books in the series I'd loved, where in Dead of Winter I felt the romance almost completely engulfed the storyline. I still found it entertaining, but Evie's indecisiveness left me wanting to slap her in the face with a phone book.

Even being the focal point of the storyline, she was by far the weakest link. Demanding answers while divulging none of her own, how many times can you leave your lack of explanation to it being too complicated or simply, I can't do this right now. It became her mantra in the end. Even though both love interests are at opposites ends of the scale, and he may have imprisoned her against her will, the Reaper Aric is a far more complex love interest. Although he only seems to have two emotions, angry and frisky. Still, that's one more than Jack, who is a serious drunk hell bent on protecting Evie. Aric would rather leave her to her own devices and to fight her own battles, not allowing the girl who can poison a population on the wind, by playing the victim.

But as entertained as I was, I felt this book hasn't added anything of significance to the series, apart from seeing the murderous banter between Jack and Aric. The romance was repetitive and cliche, and having enjoyed the first two in the series, I hope that this doesn't set the precedent for what I will now assume will be the final book. Fingers crossed it's not drawn out and deservedly wraps up on a high.

The bright spark of Dead of Winter is Selena, the Huntress with the quick wit and sharp tongue. I would love to see her with her own point of view.
