While Prisoner's plot moves at break neck speed, the writing has a more relaxed feel. Trav is in even more trouble with the FBI looking over his shoulder and the stakes are higher. Despite the tension, I found myself laughing out loud at several points.
"First order of business was shoes. I don't know about you, but the thing I have always found most unbelievable about the movie Die Hard is not that John McLane crawled through eight city blocks of furnace ductwork, or wrapped a fire hose around himself and jumped off the edge of a skyscraper.
It was that he did it all barefoot."
Green seems to have loosened up a bit and isn't afraid to show readers the humor in Trav's life and his love of science fiction. In many cases, when the humor pops up, it is a situation where if you don't laugh at the insanity of it all, you might just cry or hit someone.
The only bad thing about Prisoner...it ends in a cliffhanger. And it happens so suddenly, just like slipping across to another reality that I had to go back and re-read the final pages. I suffered from a killer book hangover and Dennis heard about it for two days on Facebook and Twitter.
So who should pick up Prisoner? Anyone who read Traveler and enjoyed it. This series is a must read for fans of science fiction especially if you enjoy time travel or alternate universes/multi-verses. Fans of mysteries and crime thrillers will enjoy how shifting realities breathes new life into these standard genres. I'll just warn you to buckle up and prepare for a wild, humor-infused ride. Prisoner will not disappoint.
