Payoffs in trilogies or series is everything for me. I hate being hooked by the first or second book to start the next only to find myself utterly disillusioned by it. The Strong & The Stolen puts in the work to wrap up this thread of Reina and Kai's lives.

Jumping into the future, we see a distinctly different world. Reina and Kai are separated again, both doing their duty/paying for their choices and actions. Fae are leaving. The citizens that relied on them are turning away from them. It's a real tangible controlled chaos. When the old enemy pops up, when Kai knows that Reina is in trouble, he's out to help her, to keep her safe. It's the end of his redemption from bully to respectable person.

Reina's strife with Yemoja from the last and this book resonates. Parent-child relationships are never easy and Chenelle didn't gloss over it. The worry is real, the frustration is warranted.

I was continually impressed with how easy it was to connect with characters in this series. The relationships that formed, the reactions to one-sided love, it all felt right. There wasn't any feeling of things being shoe horned in at the last second. As a finale it was great. The world wasn't perfect, but the day was saved, and people can live in peace for a while. A perfect spot to leave the story.
