First Read: February 2014
This book was just as good, if not better, than the first two. It definitely lived up to my expectations. I don’t think I have anything bad to say about it. I mean the characters could be stupid sometimes but it all turned out good in the end.
I liked the new characters that were introduced. Cress was great and her little romance she had going on was cute. Did anyone else think that Thorne was like 40 something? Maybe just me. Anyways. I also liked seeing Kai’s point of view. That was pretty cool. And I’m glad he’s now going to be involved in the revolution. I kind of liked having the multiple views going on. I liked knowing what was going on at each place. Also, I was really happy about Iko. I missed her. I jus love all the characters because they’re all so different from each other and from other books. It’s refreshing.
The story was great as always. There was lots of action and romance. You can’t be bored reading this book. I loved the Rapunzel aspects too. She does such a great job with her modern fairy tale parts. The ending was perfect for the next novel to start at. I was looking forward to a big battle scene in this book but, of course, it’s going to be in the next. I really can’t say much more about it. It was awesome. I loved it. I’m looking forward to Winter now.

My Review:
I’m not even sure where to start but this review might contain spoilers, not major ones but maybe a few if you haven’t read the other books. The reviews for this book are outstanding so I was super excited to start reading it. I was fine with reading about Cinder, Scarlet, Thorne, Wolf and Iko but when it came to Cress I wanted to RIP my hair out. Since this book is sort of mainly about her I was so sad that I just didn’t like her at all. She is whiny, her obsession with Thorne, was annoying to the point I felt the relationship that they had is forced and didn’t feel at all that natural. When it came to reading in her POV I usually had to stop myself from throwing my kindle. I would have preferred a lot more of Kai and Cinder since we never got that LOVE story that we all have been waiting for. They spend more time apart than together and that drives me crazy.
The story, sort of, didn’t progress as much as I would have liked until about 60% and once it got to that point I felt like I wasn’t sure what the beginning of the book was really for. I, however, LOVED the last 40% and I am excited to see what happens, since I have a lot of questions that were not answered and the end left me feeling like WHAT….I need to know what happens!
Scarlet and Wolf are still my favorite but let me say lets not talk about Scarlet right now since I just can’t. I am sure Wolf feels the same way. I adore Cinder, always have, I just want her to get a happily ever after but I know it will take her a little time seeing as she is a fugitive and a wanted criminal (which is basically the same thing) Iko and Thorne just crack me up but Cress, poor Cress, I just couldn't get past the damsel in distress. She had such potential to be a bad ass hacker genius but it sort of just didn’t happen. I wanted more from her and I understand being trapped on a satellite could make you a little whiny and child like but this was way more than I would have wanted.
The last 40% really had me on the edge of my seat, I had a bit of anxiety about what was going to happen next and the end was just awesome. I am really looking forward to Winter, you get to meet her in this book, she sort of reminds me of Alice in Wonderland, just a little mad.
If you read the others you will totally enjoy this, just keep in mind the beginning is a little bit of a stand still and the story progression is a tad bit slow but over all I rather enjoyed it.

The only thing that I loved and enjoyed, and that kept me reading this book, was Cinder. If it wasn't for her I would have DNF this book, and scarlet too. I don't like Scarlet and Cress at all, and I don't like their romances even though I kind of like Thorne. So, I hope with all my heart that Winter is better (because I love Snow White.)

Cress has been stuck in a satellite in orbit around earth for eight years. She is an accomplished hacker, and follows the progress of the rebels on board the Rampion ship. Her life changes drastically when the people on board contact her.
Ms Meyer lost me. Cinder was a fantastic debut. It had a likeable cyborg main character, a fascinating futuristic world, and it used its fairytale roots to its maximum. Scarlet saw Cinder and Kai separated, something I didn't like, but we got a heartbreaking plot with Scarlet and Wolf at the center instead. Cress, however, doesn't seem to offer anything new or interesting.
When we meet Cress in her satellite, I felt for her. The poor girl hasn't had proper human contact in years, yet she's still spunky and self-sufficient. The moment Cress gets caught up in a whirlwind of events, she loses her spark. All she does is hide behind others, afraid, and gets herself in trouble because of her naivete. We are told she's an awesome hacker, but any hacking she does is off-page. She's the classic bland damsel in distress that I though Ms Meyer was above of writing. I was hoping Cress could maybe become great friends with Iko or Cinder, but she never does.
My biggest disappointment was the plot. Cress hinges on a first, pivotal action, which was terribly executed. Let's just say that two main characters act as if they only have one single brain cell in their heads, causing trouble that takes longer than this book to fix. I was expecting better plotting from Ms Meyer in a third book in a series. After the starting action, the speed slows down to a crawl. There are too many points of view which have to get page time to create any sense of development. The main cast is split up for too long, and their chemistry disappears. It's clear that Cress is simply a set-up for the last book in the series, Winter.
I'm very worried about Winter. As it stands now, it seems to be 800 pages long - twice the length of Cinder. Since Cress already has pacing issues at 550 pages, I can't imagine how the author is going to manage to keep the story moving for so long. Added to that is the fact that every book introduces a new romantic love interest - but unlike in romance series, there is no happily ever after at the end of the books. None of the current pairings, Cinder and Kai, Scarlet and Wolf, Cress and Thorne, are actually in a relationship. At the end of Cress one of them gets a slightly satisfying development, but on the romantic front there isn't enough resolution, and I'm not sure how we're going to get four couples together in one book.
I loved Cinder. Scarlet was great. But Cress was a slog and single-handedly put me into a reading slump. It does have its good moments, but they're few and far in between.

But my girls! It was so nice to read about them again, especially without the Wolf/Scarlet romance front and center. Cress is a wonderful addition to the crew, and her character is definitely someone I can sympathize with--anxious and shy but also brave and optimistic. She and Carswell Thorne's lovely "whirlwind" romance was probably the highlight of this book (not really a spoiler, since it's pretty much a given by now that the girls are going to pair up with the boys).
I never once got bored with any character's PoV, and there was a perfect balance of romance and adventure and drama, something I felt the second book had trouble with.
And Winter! Winter. Just one chapter of her, and I know I'm going to love her. Knowing the next book is titled after her makes me even more antsy to get my hands on it. I'm not going to say any more about her for fear of spoiling anything for anyone, but I can tell she's going to be by far the most interesting leading lady of all of them.
If I had to really try to stand back and say what I didn't like about Cress, it'd be that there was so much time spent on sitting around thinking up plans and talking and going back and forth and I found myself waving my hands trying to get them to move on with it and do something. But all in all, loved this book. And yeah, can't wait for Winter.

So here's the truth: I didn't even know what this book was about. I mean, I knew that it would continue the stories of Cinder and Scarlet, but I didn't even bother to read the cover because I knew I had to read it. I honestly didn't even notice the hair on the front... Yeah, so I had no idea it was a retelling of Rapunzel. I have nothing to say for myself. My lack of situational awareness did make for a great surprise though when I realized which retelling I was getting into!
The story here is a very complex one. It isn't just the story of Cress just like Scarlet was not just the story of Scarlet. Cress picks up right where Scarlet left off - with Cinder, Thorne, Scarlet, and Wolf on the run from Levana and her minions. Very quickly we meet Cress, a Lunar shell who is being held in a tower satellite and working for Thaumaturge Sybil. After a series of heart-stopping events during an attempted rescue by Cinder and the gang, Cress ends up alone in the middle of nowhere with Thorne, who she has had a schoolgirl crush on forever (honestly she's kind of a creepy stalker).
Shortly after Cress' somewhat successful rescue attempt, the story deviates into several storylines, which is probably the biggest reason why I didn't give this book a full five stars. While I understand the reason Marissa Meyer chose to separate the book into separate storylines, I found myself either kind of forgetting about other characters or getting annoyed that a different character had disappeared. The pacing seemed to drag at times... Honestly it took me almost two weeks to get through this book. It just seemed to take forever! That's not to say I didn't really enjoy it though!
As always, the world of The Lunar Chronicles is absolutely breathtaking! This time was even better though - I got to visit a satellite and FINALLY got to see some of Luna! ---- THAT is one of the main reasons I am absolutely planning to read Winter! I can't wait to get back on Luna! I can't help but picture the crescent moon on Treasure Planet!
I loved getting to know Cress. I loved how naive she was, especially in her early scenes with Thorne. She was timid, but not annoyingly so (think Anastasia Steele... *shudder*), and although she was very out of place out of her satellite, she held her own surprisingly well.
Thorne... Oh my god, Thorne. He was probably my favorite out of all the men in this series so far! I loved everything about him and most especially his attitude. He reminded me so much of Captain Jack Harkness (and the fact that he's also a captain was not lost on me). The romance here, as in the first two books, was convincing and totally non-instalovey!
The other characters were obviously amazing too - if I didn't love them I wouldn't have picked up book number three! I was so glad to get some more Cinder/Kai time in this book! I can't wait to see where there story goes in book number four! But probably one of my absolute favorite characters in Cress was Iko! I love her, I love her! I hope there's a story all about Iko at some point because I'd definitely read that.
Okay, so I don't want to ramble, which is what often happens when I post a good review. Suffice it to say I really, really liked Cress! There were some pacing issues that caused me to drag this book out over a longer-than-normal period of time, but it was still action packed and I enjoyed it enough that I've already purchased Fairest and definitely plan to preorder Winter! I'm guessing I'll have to set aside a month for that one...
