1. Everything Kelley Armstrong writes is fantastic and this was no exception.
2. I'm a little disappointed with Olivia and Gabriel's relationship. I'm trying so hard to be patient.
3. I'm glad this is a longer series. There's still so much information we need.
4. I feel like this book wasn't as exciting as the previous ones but it had a lot of information I think we'll need in the previous books. So don't expect a ton of action.
5. I feel slightly disappointed after reading this one. I know everything was important but I was expecting more. It'll be worth it once the next book comes out I'm sure.

- Cainsville, the Fae, visions and supernatural creatures surrounding this tale continue to draw me in. Armstrong’s weaving of mythology into this series is like crack and I am always looking for a fix.
- The overall mystery and sub-mysteries lure you in. The questions regarding Oliva, her parent’s, the murders, Gabriel and Cainsville have all been fascinating. Deceptions answered many of those questions.
- Armstrong is brilliant writer and her stories have a flow to them that allows the reader to slip into the world. Despite my decaffeinated aspects, I enjoyed Deceptions and devoured it.
- Gabriel. Ah Gabriel, he is quirky, strong, determined, misunderstood and odd. Sometimes he is pushy, and socially inapt. I find I want to hug him, but I know he would hate it.
- This book focused more on Olivia and her relationships with Gabriel and Ricky. I know many folks have issues with the TRIANGLE, but honestly, in this instance I did not. I found the answers through Olivia’s visions of who they are fascinating. I also find their friendship interesting, and enjoy when the three work together.
Decaffeinated Aspects
- What happen to Olivia? Ugh. I love strong, confident female protagonist, and in Deceptions Olivia was whiny. Towards the end of the book, she seemed to be a tad strong and I hope we see more of that in Betrayals.
- I like Ricky, I find him to be charming and even like that he belongs to a Biker Club. However, a scene where Olivia goes with him to their club pissed me off. It had to do with biker mentality about their woman. Olivia played submissive.
- Deceptions suffered middle book syndrome. Most of the reveals, I had already pieced together as the reader. Olivia seems to be struggling and her thought process was all over the place. The mystery took a back seat to the relationship dynamics and while the sex scenes were hot, they were not all necessary.

This book was incredible. While book 3 of a planned 5 book series, Armstrong did a great job of wrapping up the majority of the mysteries involved, while leaving a precious few dangling for the remaining books. And you want to know what will happen. I left feeling halfway satisfied and halfway crying for the next novel.
The best part, and this is saying a whole lot for me, the hater of love triangles, is the love triangle. Armstrong does it in a unique way, nailing the triangle into the foundation of her extremely detailed world building, so it doesn't sprout out of nowhere. Olivia is a strong, well-defined character, as are the men who care for her - Ricky is a nice guy with a tough streak, who is there for Olivia when she needs it, while Gabriel is hard, damaged, and at times unlikable, but is Olivia's right hand, her protection, and her safety net, and in this novel, starts to open up a bit more.
The characters are the best parts of stories from Armstrong, their personalities so carefully built that they feel like real people. A huge fan of Gabriel (he's the side of the triangle I'm rooting for), I found Olivia's choice was a total mystery. She could go either way and it would be a reasonable decision, to me. And I think that's the revelation of true-feeling characters - like real people, their decisions aren't cut and dry and they aren't easy. It's also a great deal of fun watching Ricky and Gabriel become friends and learn to accept the places Olivia has given them in her world.
All in all, this story was just another home run for the Cainsville series, with twists and turns, more mythology, a new mystery, romance, and angst. I will try very hard not to start biting my nails waiting for number 4.
