This was a quick easy read about a couple with an empty nest at Christmas. It was funny, touching and a fun read.

I picked this up as a quick, Christmas-related read, mostly because it was so short I knew I could knock it out in a few hours. If you take it for what it’s meant to be, a mildly funny Christmas story about giving, then it’s a good little read. I was a little annoyed by everyone’s exaggerated reaction to the Kranks deciding to go on vacation for Christmas, but the end turns out okay. Still not a fan of Grisham, though.

John Grisham [JG] me parece bastante entretenido, por lo general. Hay gente que piensa que JG sólo escribe novelas de abogados y juicios, lo cual no es estrictamente cierto. Hay una novela suya, La granja, que no trata de juicios. Y ésta que nos ocupa, claro está. Nada menos que el guión de una comedia navideña para consumo rápido. Y no es que esté mal el libro, ojo, es simplemente que JG no nos tiene acostumbrados a estas cosas. En la propia portada se nos avisa de que ya hay hecha una película sobre el libro. Y francamente, me parece que JG domina los secretos del guión de películas para todos los públicos. La historia tiene todos los momentos que deben aparecer en una historia PG-13 norteamericana: un enemigo, un resbalón con una cáscara de plátano, la redención final, el momento en el que alguien, al final de la película, se pone de pie aplaudiendo despacio y se van uniendo los demás hasta el gran clamor... tiene todos los clichés. Como JG escribe bien, se le toleran, pero no me busquen en el cine cuando la estrenen aquí. Mi nota: Insustancial.
