Phonics for Reading

by Gillian Brown and Kate Ruttle

Published 10 April 1997
Cambridge Reading is a major new reading scheme which provides stimulating books and support materials for the teaching of reading throughout the primary years. Key features include: a coherent yet flexible structure for teaching and learning; a variety of high quality, attractive picture books; a balance of different text types and genres, including stories, poems and information books; an integrated phonics programme; comprehensive support materials. Phonics for Reading provides an innovative approach to the teaching of phonics after individual letter recognition is secure (year 2/primary 3 and upwards). It contains 32 photocopiable worksheets with accompanying teacher's pages. There are problem-solving activities which help children to recognise and pronounce common letter patterns within words. Children are taught to use this knowledge in the reading strategy of 'sounding out' unrecognised words.

A major reading scheme for the teaching of reading and the development of literacy throughout the primary years. Richard Brown and Kate Ruttle's I Went to School This Morning will appeal to all children who are easily diverted by adventures on the way to school or elsewhere. The text is easy to follow and they will enjoy Margaret Chamberlain's illustrations.

Beginning to Read: Teacher's Book 1 accompanies the resources in the first phase of the scheme and gives essential guidance on how to introduce the scheme in Reception/Primary 1. There are two parts. Part 1 has a fold-out grid showing all the resources in the first three phases and begins with an overview of the scheme. The remaining four sections give information on: Getting started; the Big Books; group reading; the reading development worksheets; introducing phonics; building a basic sight vocabulary; home-school links and recording keeping and assessment. Part 2 consists of the reading development and phonics worksheets that accompany each book, together with background notes and suggestions on ways to use them within the context of group reading.

Suitable for children in Year 1 (age 5), Going to School is from the Cambridge Reading genre strand Narrative Recounts - a strand which motivates children to explore their personal responses and make links to their own experiences. Each story marks a significant event from someone's childhood. While some of the stories are set in modern Britain, others take place in the 1930s or 1940s in locations as diverse as Hong Kong and Trinidad. This story by Grace Hallworth is about her childhood in Trinidad in the 1930s. For part of the time Grace lived with her aunt, away from her siblings, where she sometimes felt lonely. Grace's aunt was a teacher and went to school on a tram everyday. Grace's aunt said she was too young to start school, but Grace couldn't wait . . . This pack of 6 is for guided group reading.

This book gives essential guidance on how to introduce Cambridge Reading in Reception/Primary 1. Part 1 offers specific guidance on how to use the Preparing to Read books and support materials, with suggestions on fostering home-school links and recording children's progress. Part 2 contains a teacher's notes and a photocopiable worksheet for each of the children's books. The teacher's notes give detailed suggestions for whole class sessions, and ideas for group reading and independent activities.

A unique interactive page at the end of each book gives children the opportunity to practise target sound recognition in the context of a game. Each book has an embossed lower case letter on the back cover, so children can trace the shape with their finger. The Cambridge Alphabet Books pack contains 29 books; one for each letter plus ch-, sh-, th-.
