The formalism of Green's functions has developed into a multifunctional aid in both researching and teaching physics, with their importance resulting from the functions themselves. It is based equally on quantum mechanics and statistical physics and, furthermore, relates to aspects of quantum field theory and to solution methods taken from the theory of differential equations. Gasser, Heiner and Elk have selected the areas of application the weak interference of thermodynamic equilibrium, multiparticle physics and solids. Particularly in the case of the latter, Green's functions allow many questions to be dealt with in connection. Most usual lectures on theoretical solid-state physics and quantum mechanics fail to treat the method of Green's functions adequately, making this book a welcome supplement and the basis for a separate lecture, specialist seminars or for private study.
