Freaky Reapers is a crossover with the author’s Aisling Grimlock series.
The circus is in Detroit, not far from the neighborhood where Poet once lived on the streets. When Max, the owner, offered her a job and a home with the circus, she took it. Dangerous things were happening on the streets, and the circus provided her safety. But she was never comfortable with the way she left, not knowing what happened to the others she’d grown to care for. So she’s determined to search them out, to do what she can to help them, to make up for having left without a trace. But it’s never easy to go back, especially not in a world like the one in this series.
This book just might be my favorite in the series thus far. There was a lot of depth in this book as readers learn more about Poet’s background and her time on the streets. There was real pain there, real fear. The guilt she felt clearly ate at her more than even she realized. This one really takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster.
My only complaint is Kade. I think he’s just going to be that one character that I will never truly be able to like. He claims to love Poet, but it feels like he also treats her like a weak child who isn’t capable of taking care of herself. He’s cast himself as her alpha protector, even though she’s powerful and strong and wholly capable. And the moment she shows any autonomy, doing something he deems “potentially dangerous,” he whines and pouts and generally acts like a man-baby. But I enjoy this series too much to let his character sway me.
