I rate this with a 3 since there aren't any half ratings ...this is more a 3.5 star review. I was both happy and sad with this book. Sad, because unlike with the BDB, I wasn't instantly sucked into the story line. It took me a long time to get into the story and really feel apart of it. That said, the characters were intriguing and definitely full of emotion that I could feel. I hope that the next book in Ward's Bourbon Kings series is easier to get into.

This book took me back to the heyday of the epic night serial dramas. The Bourbon Kings can claim a place right beside Falcon Crest, Dallas, and Dynasty. Loved every dysfunctional second of it. I seriously need the Angel's Share now!!!

Coffee Dates with the Bourbon Kings

• First date: Our date starts out slow as we slowly get to know Lane and Lizzie. Ward brought the grounds and Easterly estate to life. Our characters are broken, and flashbacks into childhood have me shivering. At this point, I am wondering about a romance since Lane appears to be married. The tale has multiple POV’s and I am pleased with this discovery. Breaks between character POV's are easy to distinguish and necessary to allow us to connect and understand.


• Second date: They say the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence and I am thinking the Bradford family can keep their manicured lawns and maids. If you liked the hit television shows Dallas or Dynasty, you will quickly become caught up in the drama and secrets of this family. The characters were interesting and Ward did an excellent job of letting us inside their heads. Gin has serious Daddy issues, and I went back and forth between wanting to smack her and hugging her. Edward the oldest son just tugged at my heartstrings and I enjoyed every moment with him. I am very curious about the love interests there..one old, one new.  Lane finds himself having to deal with everything and you can feel him wanting to take flight, but he is determined not to lose Lizzie and a part of him wants to protect the others. Drama, twists and turns had me completely caught up in their soap opera lives. Secondary characters added charm, mystery and depth.


• Third date: I loved the different POV’s as it helped me understand all the players. Ward really worked on setting the foundation and fleshing out the history of this family, but she also gave us a romance, mystery and suspense. The romance is not center stage making this feel more like woman's fiction or chick-lit.  Old fears, miscommunication and the odds stacked against them at every turn did not make this an easy second chance romance. Their feelings felt genuine particularly Lizzie’s who struggled to believe. While the story is far from over, we do get closure on the romance, which isn’t to say our next date couldn’t blow that all to hell, we at least for now, we can end the date satisfied and hungry for more.

What a guilty pleasure! The best way I can describe The Bourbon Kings is by saying it's a mix of reality television (think Real Housewives) and a good soap opera (think 80's soaps like Dallas). Like reality TV, there are plenty of rich people problems to gawk at and like the best soap operas, there are characters you love to hate, characters who always seem to come out on top, and complicated motivations. I loved it.

The Bourbon Kings focuses on the Bradford siblings, Edward, Lane, Max and Gin, heirs to one of Kentucky's largest bourbon empires. They are beyond rich and own a sprawling estate. Siblings Gin and Edward play rather large roles in the book while the focus is on Lane and his love interest, Lizzie. This is slated to be a series of books so I'm sure each of the siblings will get to take center stage as the series continues. There are lots of skeletons hiding in closets, lots of disturbing revelations and many awkward and uncomfortable situations. It's twisted and over-the-top and I couldn't get enough.

This is not typically a genre I read a lot of. I usually find the story-lines corny, the dialogue unrealistic and the situations ridiculous. I'm still not quite sure what exactly it was about this book that drew me in so quickly. The plot is not the most original - the rich boy falls for the "regular" girl despite his family's wishes. (show spoiler)[Hearts are broken, tears are shed, lots of bourbon is drunk and, ultimately, second chances are given.] (hide spoiler) It sounds like the plot of a lot of romance novels. It's not that the plot was bad, it was just predictable. I also was a little disappointed in the romance. There wasn't much of a buildup and not a whole lot of romantic tension between Lane and Lizzie. I actually preferred reading about Gin's love life (hopefully there's more in the next book).

Despite those things, this was a really fun read with a lot of gasp-worthy moments that make this type of book so exciting. This is not great literature, and it's not the most original story. But, you can't really compare those things in my opinion. Just like you can't really compare your favorite soap to an Oscar-worthy film. If you go into it just wanting an enjoyable read with a few shocking moments, a good dose of romance and a whole lotta family drama, you'll be pleased with The Bourbon Kings. I can't wait to see what happens next for the Bradford family; I'm looking forward to the next in the series.
