Mayhem is a perfect way to describe what happened in this book. We received more information regarding the Ephors and the oracle, but at the same time, many situations started to spin out of control. With the reappearance of the Ephors, our trio found themselves thrust into a trial, which was intended to test Harper. In the meantime, David uncovers some of the lies set in place to protect him, and this prompted him to rethink some of his relationships. Lots of drama as far as the relationships are concerned - romantic (Bee, Ryan, Harper, David) and "professional" (Oracle, Mage, Paladin). The circle of those who know grew, as the danger escalated. But do not fear, Harper was as awesome and snarky as ever.
Note: I keep reading how this book was not as good as the first book. I don't know if I agree 100% with that statement. What I will say is there is more drama, heartbreak, and heavier moments than the first book. This did not equate to bad, because when I look at the story as a whole, I know Hawkins did what she had to do to move this story in the right direction (or at least, the direction she intended).
