This is (I think) the first book I've read by the author. Not sure if the super slow start is typical for her, but I almost DNFd it because it felt like nothing was happening.
Outside of the pacing, it's 2020, and while I love morally gray characters and straight up villains, I don't think one of their biggest personality traits needs to be that they are emotionally abusive. And that's the love interest. He's controlling, manipulative, and abusive.
And the MC, Poppy, eats it up. Of course, she's 18 and sheltered, and doesn't know that this isn't how healthy love/lust should look.
Maybe Hawke isn't the true LI, and there will be a better one in the next book, but I'll have to decide if I want to continue with this story to find out. And I'm leaning heavily towards a no.
This was... I don’t even know. I became obsessed with characters so much that I couldn’t put it down. It’s definitely an adult book but is a nice balance of like ya writing styles just with a more adult feel. The story takes a while to fully form into something where you see the actual problem being faced and things are kept in the dark for a lot of the book but then it all comes together perfectly and like????? You don’t even expect half of what’s happening by the end. It does contain some heavy romance so if that’s your thing this is definitely the book for you. I haven’t been this upset about having to wait for a next book in a long time.
OHMYGODDDD. This was f*cking fantastic. This was just SO. GOOD.
GOLD, PURE GOLD
i can’t even take the feelings that I have... going on... right now.
This was absolutely intoxicating. Every second. And omfg so swoon worthy.
I loved how I truly felt, on some level, a connection with Poppy, where I was finding things out in time, just as she was. I really liked this. It was refreshing to be constantly guessing! Some of the outcome was predictable, but only to a certain degree, and the rest was definitely not was I was expecting. Honestly, though, I had no idea what to expect, so.
I loved this book. Poppy was such a wonderful heroine. I loved her sense of adventure and how she wasn't satisfied with not having a say in her own life. And once Hawke entered the picture, it was fun to watch her spread her wings.
This is a great paranormal story with elements of gods, wolven, vampyres and Atlantians. Its the perfect mix of vampires and mythology. The characters, setting and storyline were superb and make it hard to put this book down when I needed to focus on something else.
It's going to be a long year waiting for the next book, but I know I'll pre-order as soon as I can.
