Wish I had the graphic novel beside me while listening to this awesome, fully casted audiobook with sound effects! I loved Nimona and Blackheart as antivillains and loved the whole shapeshifter plot point.
'Nimona' is so lovely and fun! Five pages in and I was already in love with the main characters. There are so many important messages hidden in the apparently light hearted story. What a gem!
Nimona is this unapologetic, excited girl with totally unexplained superpowers. She's a shapeshifter, or a skin changer, or... well honestly who cares because Sir Blackheart's evil career needs some serious boosting and HERE COMES NIMONA.
This graphic novel is a really well thought-out story about a girl who is lost, two old friends forced by the Institution to be enemies, and a system in power too busy entertaining its own ideas to worry about its people. There's deep sentiment and delightful silliness in the panels. I really enjoyed it.
As a graphic novel, it's brief. The characters and world aren't really as well developed as in a novel. That said, for the little slice of life you get to see them, they're delightful. I certainly wish there were additional volumes, but Nimona is based on a webcomic. I love the characters' fears and struggles, and enjoyed trying to spot Nimona in various panels.
Many of the best scenes were "filler" - moments where Nimona is complaining about sardines in pizza or hiding in Blackhart's cape from a scary movie.
This was a great little book and a wholly recommend it. I don't typically pick up graphic novels, and this one is fantastic.
Nimona is a rather odd graphic novel. It focuses on the villains of a story instead of the heroes and in doing so makes you sympathetic to their stories and their goals. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this comic, but I’m very happy with what was delivered.
The first thing to note about Nimona, is that she is a bad guy…she loves to reek havoc and destruction and she’s quite good at turning a normal situation into one of chaos. She’s killed people and set fire to innocent people’s homes, but there is still something in her that makes her completely likable. She’s chaotic and goofy but she’s also dark and brooding. Getting to know her is equal parts hilarity and heartbreaking. Lord Blackheart is the nemesis of Sir Goldenloin, and he is particular in the way he opposes Goldenloin and the Institution. He has a code of ethics, but Nimona is the wrench in his plans. She helps me grow but also shows him when it’s too much. I love the odd balance between these two. They build a friendship that is heartfelt and connected but also teeters on the verge of shattering. Blackheart’s story is really pushed forward by her. I have to say I loved the fact that this book doesn’t focus just on a battle of good vs evil, but also goes into the gray areas where good can be evil and vice versa. We get to see villains painted in a good light and heroes in a bad, we get to see them fight against not only each other but themselves.
The art is pretty similar to Lumberjanes and even in its simplicity, it has a lot of emotion to it. I love the character designs for everyone and the weird wonderful mash-up of fantasy and science fiction!
I’m definitely a Noelle Stevenson fan now! Between this and Lumberjanes I have to say she’s particularly good at creating simple stories with tons of little heartfelt layers.
Quick Thoughts 1. This was my kind of humor. The shark? Hilarious. 2. I love how Nimona isn't necessarily "good". She loves to kill and is a little scary. 3. I liked that this story was about the villains. It was refreshing. 4. The plot was hilarious but intense too. 5. I really hope there's more to this story!
