Teen tropes were as prevalent as all the pop culture references in this book. I found myself wanting to stick in a secondary characters POV chapters more than main character Sam's. But this book servers the purpose of an easy brain-break read.

A cute idea with the title and chapters being song lyrics, but the story felt like mostly set up for the sequel. Set well in Seattle, but I still don't think I'll continue with this series.

Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride caught my eye on the clearance rack at Half Price Books. It was shiny, dark and ominous. The cover was in total contradiction to the humorous description on the back. The book seemed right up my alley. A fish-out-of-water-save-the-world story with a side of humor.

The book was funny. Death wearing saddle shoes. One of the main characters was…nevermind, don’t want to spoil that bit. But there was too much going on—a lot of back story and paranormal politics that were not adequately explained. It was hard enough following Sam through the discovery of his powers. Then you throw in the shape shifters and their problems and the power struggles between the different paranormal types, you’ve got a mess on your hands.

Of course, with all that going on, there are loads of characters to keep straight and each time Sam needed to move to the next stage of discovery, a new character was thrown into the mix to help the story move along. It was hard to get attached to any one character. I didn’t much care for Sam except for the fact he was rolling in this confusing mess along with me. I figured, since this appears to be a series, we were going to get out the mess together. My favorite character, the one with bite, ended up in a bowling ball bag for most of the story.

Overall, I wasn’t a fan of Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride. While the humor was fun, the overall plot, back stories and sheer number of characters had my mind reeling in the end. Unfortunately, Hold Me Closer, Necromancer gets a thumbs down.
