This book is why I’m wary of slow burns. Done right, they’re brilliant. Done like this, there’s just so much repetition, telling us things we know over and over instead of gaining forward momentum. Doing it by audio didn’t help, since there’s no way to skim over the tenth time you hear a sentence.
Down to two stars at one point, but back up to three because I really do like any historicals set outside of England, and because it made me reread Laurent. But I’m glad I read a different Jeannie Lin first.
