I’m so happy that I read Archangel’s Legion by Nalini Singh because it involves my favorite archangel/angel couple, Raphael and Elena. These two are the reason I fell hard for the Guild Hunter series by the fabulous Nalini Singh. Although I do love Raphael’s Seven too and can’t wait to read their books, Elena and Raphael will always be my favorite, until Illium aka Bluebell, finally gets his book. Illium is a sweetheart, and I need to find out who wins his heart, after everything he went through with the mortal woman he fell in love with initially. He deserves happiness like everyone else.

In the sixth installment, angels are falling from the skies, and vampires are dying from an impossible disease, and it’s up to Raphael, Elena and Raphael’s Seven to figure out what is going on in their city. An angelic war is brewing, and Raphael and Elena know it’s going to cause a lot of damage and deaths. They have to prepare for it, but in the meantime, they have other issues happening too. A dark force is also stirring, and it has eyes for Raphael, and Elena is scared for him, but she will always be there to help him. Elena also has things that have been haunting her from her past. She will never get over it until she confronts the one person that blames her for the past, which happens to be her father, who I can’t stand in the books.

I loved being back with Raphael and Elena in the sixth book, even though there was some drama in this book with a former lover/friend of Raphael. Elena showed her jealously in this book, but Raphael proved so many times how much he loved her. This book involved a lot of action between the angelic war and all the darkness that keeps showing up in the city. Lijuan is one that suspected of making all the darkness happening, but Raphael and his Seven need to be sure. Lijuan is one archangel who I wouldn’t want to mess with, and I was scared for my favorite characters. The ending though, blew me away because I wasn’t expecting it, which is one of many reasons why I love Nalini Singh’s stories. She knows how to surprise me and leave me for more. I can’t wait to dive into the next book in this series soon because I need more of the Guild Hunter series. 

If you have not read this series by Nalini Singh and love PNR with angels/archangels/vampires, then I would recommend this series. It’s one of my favorites, which is why I’m trying to catch up on reading this series before the next book releases in November 2020.

In Archangel's Legion, the love between Raphael and Elena became an epiphany! I knew there was love with them, but here, that love was just so strong and beautiful it made the story epic in a very different way.

Listening to audiobook

In this story, we move back to Raphael and Elena as our main characters and POV. Although I’ve enjoyed seeing some of the Dimitri and Jason in more detail, it is great to get back to the Archangel and his Hunter. The story takes place almost entirely in New York, so we get to spend some time with many of the characters we’ve missed lately, like Sarah and Deacon, Evie, Ransom and Vivek.

Elena and Raphael are forced to attend a ball his mother is hosting. She seems to be in a much better place than what we’ve seen in the past. She almost seems normal. I’m not really sure exactly why this is included in the book. I’m sure Ms. Singh has a reason, it will just be shown in a future book. It just didn’t seem to have much to do with this overall story of this book.

Raphael is going through a change, both in power and something appearing on the skin of his face. He fights the growing power, worried he will lose Ellie in the process and become silent. Raphael is very concerned that he might not come out of this on the side of good. He even compares himself to Lijuan at one point.

Elena has to learn what it means to be consort to such a powerful archangel. She is forced to look over the injured and many people are looking to her for support. People who would never feel comfortable approaching Raphael himself. It takes her a little bit to figure out why everyone is coming to her. She is so worried about the city and her archangel, she just doesn’t see it.

Elena also has to come to some terms with her father. In an extremely large fight about Evie, many things are brought to light that you almost feel sorry for Jeffrey, though not much (at least in my case). I still think he is a selfish ass. I’m so happy that Evie has a two strong sisters (though Amy doesn’t show it much) and a very supportive mother. Evie is going to make a strong hunter when she grows up.

When the war starts, we get to see all of Raphael’s Seven and how well they work together as a team. I don’t want to say too much about the war and spoil anything, but it is pretty heartbreaking at times. I was so worried about the team. I was especially worried for Aodhan, who is one of Raphael’s Seven, but we really don’t meet him until this book. I hope we get a book for him soon. He seems like he has a great story to tell. I guess as children, him and Illium were inseparable. I think I might want his book more than Bluebell’s **please don’t hit me**.

The narration of this book was great as it has been for the entire series. Justine has been doing this series from the beginning and has always been wonderful. I love how she is able to make the angel’s and vampire’s voices so unemotional and the human’s have such emotion. It just really shows the differences between the beings. The one thing that I noticed is that she likes doing tons of accents. It seems like all the angels and vampires, males especially, have accents, but then I guess most don’t actually come from America, so they would have foreign accents. I don’t notice it as much with females.

Overall, if you haven’t tried this series, I highly recommend it. But, please start with book one, Angel’s Blood. It is a great series and I wouldn’t recommend this as a stand alone. I would also recommend that you try reading Angel’s Flight (anthology of only Guild Hunter stories) before this book. There are some references that you will get more if you have read it. It doesn’t take anything if you haven’t tried it, but it will add something. At least it did for me.

It seems like I’ve waited for this book forever. It was so great to revisit all the characters I love. We learn more about Illium, Aodhan, and Nassir and get a look into the archangels Elijah, Astaad and Titus. Thankfully Michaela isn’t in the book much, but it seems another has come to vie for Raphael’s affections. We also get a few scenes between Elena and her youngest sister, Eve and a more in-depth look into Elena and Jeffrey’s estrangement.

What I really loved most about this book was the continuing growth in Raphael and Elena’s relationship. While Raphael is still getting used to a consort who is technically a baby in the world of immortals, Elena continues to prove herself worthy with her strength and her unending stubbornness. I loved watching Elena step into her role as a consort in performing the duties of the title, becoming Raphael’s voice in his absence. The love between these two seemed to have evolved into a power all in itself.

I could not put this book down. It is the BEST book I’ve read all year! A wild, adrenaline rush of mystery, intrigue and danger! Nalini writes her ass off! Her worlds are meticulously planned and so descriptive. Her characters are multi-dimensional with such realness to them. One of the best authors I’ve ever read. If you haven’t had a chance to check her out, you should!
