Actually, in this case the book cover for Dragon Storm is incredibly appealing, so you could say that you can judge this book by its book cover. What I was referring to is actually going into a story thinking you won’t like it because of preconceived ideas. I knew both Constantine and Bee before starting Dragon Storm and I was convinced I wouldn’t like either character. Yes, this was very narrow-minded of me and I probably should have gotten to know them better before judging them. It’s the old…smarty pants reader thinks she knows everything and gets proven she knows nothing, trick.
I finished Dragon Fall a few days ago and was determined to hold a grudge against Bee because of her part in making Aiofe suffer through her two years of torment. I expected to start this story with it all explained and a logical reason given, as to why Bee had let her sister suffer. Unfortunately, I was left unsatisfied until nearly the end, and even then it still felt somewhat unresolved. I’d gone from loving Aiofe and Kostya in Dragon Fall to thinking she was a brat and he needed a timeout. In getting to know Bee, I realised she tends to think of things in the NOW!! Bee doesn’t hold grudges, gets through what she has to and deals with what comes, when it comes. Not a bad way to be in some respects, but it also has the power to hurt those around her. I actually liked Bee in the end, but it could have something to do with the dead dragon.
Constantine’s story started years ago in the Light Dragon Series. To be honest, my memory ain’t what it used to be and I struggled to remember who and what his story was. Unfortunately, instead of going back and doing a re-read, I just plodded along hoping it would all come back to me. Some of it did and some, not so much. I think Con is misunderstood and carrying a huge burden that only a few people/dragons know about. One other thing....Constantine’s dead.
Bee and Constantine together seem like an unlikely mating. With Con thinking he’s in love with Ysolde (who is mated to Baltic), being dead (sacrificed his life years ago) and his dragonkin hating him for his part in their bloody history, he has a few issues. Bee is an independent Charmer (curse breaker) who had been hurt in a previous relationship with another dragon. When the two meet under unusual circumstances, they’re attracted to each other, but spend most of their time slinging insults. Con also has a bad habit of talking about kinky stuff at the weirdest times, but I think it’s his way of slowing things down, distracting people around him and giving himself time to prepare for a situation. There were some steamy scenes, but there was more talk than action, in the first half.
As per usual Katie MacAlister has provided me with a humorous romance that includes enough action, adventure and Demon Lord havoc to keep me entertained. I loved catching up with the wyverns and their mates, Jim the demon dog and a new character named Gary, who has a similar outlook on life as Jim. Dragon Storm has ended with a happy couple, but there are unresolved issues that the Dragon’s and their mates must face in the future. I look forward to more Katie MacAlister dragon's in the future.
