This novel is based on the true story of a young Indian girl called Sacagawea living in the tough world of frontier America, who is captured by slave hunters from the Minnetaree tribe, then "won" in a game by a French trader. Her future looks gloomy until her new husband is hired as a guide by a group of explorers, but it is her rather than her husband who turns out to be invaluable to them as they trek into the unchartered West. This book is also intended to be used for historical purposes. Scott O'Dell has won the Newbery Medal for "Island of the Blue Dolphins" (Puffin) and the Hans Christian Andersen Author Medal (for a body of work), the highest international recognition given to an author of children's books.
