I like the story of Book 1 (Pivot Point) more compared to this. Trevor's personality here is confused and makes his character weak. Addie knows what she wants and she'll do anything to get it, she also learned a lot more about herself and what she can do. Duke seems to be sweet but knowing what he did on Book 1, it's difficult for Addie to trust him again. I like the story of Laila and Connor - but so far, Connor has the strongest character here, he seems to know everything but stays out of trouble, he's not impulsive unlike Laila but that what makes them like each other - opposite attracts. Laila is a good friend, despite what she did to Addie in Book 1, she knows she made a mistake and is willing to do whatever it takes for Addie's forgiveness.

It's no secret I love Kasie West, and with this duology, she combined a great romance with science fiction elements. West gave us a great and compelling story, which allow her characters to discover so many wonderful things. Several characters discovered redemption. They were able to atone for past indiscretions, and gain forgiveness from those they wronged. Many characters were able to find peace of mind, love, and happiness. I am an HEA girl, so I sort of live for this stuff. There was also the additional of Connor. He was a superb addition to the group, and I fell in love with his character. I wish there would be more Pivot Point books, but you know, all good things must end.

Split Second starts a couple weeks after the end of Pivot Point, and Addie is struggling with a new ability. Suddenly she can slow down time, but she can’t control it. Yet. Then it’s time for a break from school which she decides to spend with her father out in the Norm world. Meanwhile, we get the added POV of Laila as she works toward learn to restore memories, so she can help Addie get hers back. But the Compound is watching Addie and her father seems to be lying to her, and she’s oddly drawn to a Norm named Trevor (duh!).

Split Second was another fun, quick read. The focus is a bit more on the romance this time, because Addie gets the feeling that she wants her memories back because of someone rather than something that happened. It’s pretty awkward being in love with someone who doesn’t really know you, because you have months of memories of them and they’ve just met you. It was cute watching them get to know each other again.

However, the plot seemed to have been forgotten once the happily ever after for Trevor and Addie was obtained. The CC is keeping an eye on Addie because of her new ability, and Addie is trying to get a handle on this new ability. Is it just the natural advancement of her time manipulation, or is it something else like the CC suspects? Well, I don’t know. This is never answered. There’s a bunch of excitement near the end where the teens use their various abilities to fight the system, and then nothing. I would have liked to have known about the original of Addie’s new ability, since it was made into a big deal for the whole book.

In the end, Split Second was enjoyable. I don’t know if I really cared about Laila’s chapters though. I was already invested in Addie’s life, and didn’t get that same connection with Laila. It was nice to see what was happening on the compound why Addie was away, but I don’t think it was fully necessary because they did spend a fairly good chunk of the book together or texting or talking on the phone.

It was good that I immediately read this one after Pivot Point. Otherwise, it would have been disorienting. My main issue with this book is the fact that another POV was added and that's Laila's. For some reason, I never liked Laila. Plot wise, I also have some issues regarding Addie's decision to choose the Duke Rivers path. I mean, come on...

I adore Kacie West. Her characters are vibrant and real and fun. Her plots are engaging. She can have all sorts of plot threads and she ties them all up nicely. And she doesn't shortcut the happy ending.

I liked her dedication to Addie and her stubbornness and how she loved her brothers. And Connor is fantastic. I was fun that he's smarter than her and stubborn but really sweet. Seriously, her characters make it such a fun story. Addie and Trevor were also great but I kind of liked that they were the secondary story because they weren't quite as interesting as Laila and Connor. And I liked Duke in this story and kind of adored Eli.

You’ve probably heard me fangirl about Pivot Point if you’ve looked at my blog or my Twitter at any point in the past fifteen months. It’s a favourite of mine, and it still makes me emotional when I think about it. I have been eagerly anticipating the second (and, sadly, final) book in the series since January 2013, and on release day I was fidgeting and finding it hard to concentrate on work. I needed to know what had happened to Addy, and what Trevor was up to, and how the pair were going to grow closer for a second time. I finally got my hands on a copy of the book, and sped through it.

Nose Graze — Book reviews & blogging tips

A few things are completely undeniable. Most importantly, Kasie West knows how to rock romances. She's a master at creating two characters with mouth-watering chemistry. It's seriously incredible! I knew Addie and Trevor had it, but Laila and Connor... ohhh damn. Hot stuff!

But I do have to say, I'm a tiny bit disappointed. Split Second wasn't bad or anything (far from it!), but honestly.. I think I was hoping for a little more. I can't help but feel that Pivot Point rocked harder and this sequel didn't quite live up to the first book. Split Second was good, but I wouldn't say it floored me.. and I wanted to be floored!

For starters, we kind of got off on the wrong foot. When I started the book, I thought I had remembered everything from Pivot Point, but it turns out, I had forgotten a few details. There isn't a really detailed recap in Split Second, so I felt like I was being thrown into the deep end. I was a bit lost and struggling to pick up the pieces. Eventually it did all come back to me, but it doesn't change the fact that I was hazy on the details for a while.

And I also felt like many parts of the book felt unresolved. I suppose it was realistic in the sense that the teenagers just wanted to fix their own lives/romances and didn't care much beyond that. But as a result, I felt like we didn't get much information at all about the government and the whole compound society. I finished the book feeling like I didn't have a good understanding of how that was left. I think I expected it to turn into some kind of "Let's overthrow the government and uncover all the secrets and change the world" book, but it totally didn't. And the fact that it didn't was a bit disappointing after learning that the government supposedly changed its citizens memories A LOT.

I know I'm complaining a lot, but the fact is that I DID like the book. It was fun, swoony, and a bit hilarious at times! It was definitely a good book. I'm just a bit mopey because I wanted it to be SO SUPER FREAKING AMAZING like Pivot Point was, but it didn't wow me to that same degree. I really LIKED everything. I just kept waiting for the moment when I'd fall head over heels in love with the book, and it never quite got there!
