However, this book was great escapism. Dan Hook wrote three simultaneous engaging stories that were interlinked more and more as the story went on. I cared about the characters he created and the world they inhabited. There was corruption, heroism, and "ancient weapons" as society needs to relearn what we currently know.
The plot threads were compelling and the characters were all unique. This is a powerful opening entry into the series that I cannot wait to return to. Dan Hook knows how to tell a story worth reading that never delves too far into the depressing aspects of the end of the world. Characters struggle to survive, but they continue to push forward, even when the easy thing to do is give up. That is a surprisingly hopeful message found in this post-apocalyptic story.
