I've seen so many freaky things since I started attending Mythos Academy last fall. I know I'm supposed to be a fearless warrior, but most of the time, I feel like I'm just waiting for the next Bad, Bad Thing to happen. Like someone trying to kill me--again.

In a lot of ways I think this might have been my favorite of the series (ahemahemNottahemahem) but it also highlighted all the problems I have with the books...

For one, I think Pure Evil nonsense is really passé. I want my villains to be a bit more multi-dimensional than that, and not just evil incarnate. That being said, I do think this is a product of the time it was written, and that there are three more books for the villain to possibly develop more personality and conflict, so here's to that!

It's really formulaic. Every book has Gwen having some Feeling that the reader (aka me) immediately knows is correct but Gwen being confused about. She comes really close to figuring out what's bothering her while the reader screams about all the clues, and then gets near blindsided but what she's been missing all along. Is this was only one book in the series that's fine, but when it's a pattern it's getting quite iffy. Especially since Gwen just needs to listen to her first hunch instead of dismissing it!

The romance is still going down-hill. Logan and Gwen barely have ANY time together, and when they are together it's still angst. None of the fun we had in the first book. Also, it's just so weird that they're "in love" or that people keep saying how Logan is crazy about Gwen. Why are you telling me this instead of showing me???

But I still really enjoy Gwen as a main character, Daphne and Carson as her best friends, Nott and Nyx--be still my beating heart!!--and Oliver. I'm hoping things will get deeper as they get more serious :)

РЕЦЕНЗИЯ:

ВНИМАНИЕ, ВОЗМОЖНЫ СПОЙЛЕРЫ

Как обидно товарищи. Первые две книги были просты, слабы, но весьма легки для прочтения и расслабления. Третья же книга полное уныние и печаль. Сюжет банален, герои раздражают до зубовного скрежета, а автор считает своих читателей за полных идиотов.

Гвен как всегда неимоверно крута, но при этом ни черта не умеет и не может. Все твердят о том, какая она особенная и как много значит для будущего всего мира, однако все, что вижу я – бесконечное нытье, самобичевание и тупость (и автора в том числе). Героиня постоянно истерит, говорит или думает о том, как ей тяжело быть Избранной, с ее силами и вообще, как тяжко ей.

Спросите, почему тупость? Отвечу. Всю книгу Гвен ищет артефакт, который некоторое время назад спрятала ее мама. И как бы, героиня у нас не знает ГДЕ артефакт спрятал, но ведь автор то ЗНАЕТ, и поэтому постоянно тычет этим фактом читателям в глаза. «АХ, вы еще не заметили, тогда посмотрите направо, видите статую? Точно видите? Запомните ее. Ой, нет вы что, она не играет никакой роли, но запомните ее». И так по пять раз на две страницы. Конечно, милая Гвен потом находит дневник мамочки, где мама постоянно рисовала эти самые, чертовы статуи, но вся ее мысль «наверное, мама, просто любила эти статуи».

В общем, весь сюжет, Гвен пытается понять, где этот чертов артефакт, страдает по любви к прекрасному, как Бог Спартанцу и пытается найти злобного Чемпиона не менее злобного бога Локи.

Сюжет, в общем есть, а по сути – нет. Дивчана наша постоянно ноет, о том, как ей тяжело, что она ничего не может и жуть как любит Логана. Такое ощущение, будто тяжело только ей, а остальные герои размытый фон, раскрытием которых Эстеп не особо утруждается. Дафна, которая была вполне симпатичная мне в первой книге, скатилась в любовную лихорадку и вечные засосы со своим парнем (даже не помню его имя). Логан существует лишь как символ, символ горячего парня, который выбрал героиню из бесконечного числа других девиц, подчеркивая лишний раз ее особенность. Я забыла сказать, что Логан у нас сексуальный герой с трагичной историей? Ну так вот получите и распишитесь. Больше вы от паренька не получите.

Главная злодейка/злодей/злодеи тоже просто фон, даже не ФОНИЩЕ, а так фончик. Невнятные, неинтересные, не запоминающиеся. Так что… скучно, скучно и еще раз скучно.

А еще огромный минус Дженнифер Эстеп в том, что ей абсолютно наплевать на мир и мифологию своих книг. Нам дают общую картину – вот вам школа, для потомков разных героев, вот вам боги и злобный Бог, который хочется вырваться из тюрьмы, кушайте не подавитесь. А конкретнее пожалуйста? Где детали, раскрытие, погружение. И уж плиз, объясните мне, почему Боги те еще мудилы? «Аххх, мы Боги не можем убить Локи, у нас есть договор, других Богов не трогать, даже слишком злобных, слишком опасных, вместо этого мы спихнем всю ответственность на своих чемпионов и потомков всяких великих воинов. Мы ни хрена им не скажем, не сообщим полезной информации, не будем помогать советами, а лишь дадим тусклые, совершенно бесполезные намеки. Но, вы поторопитесь, а то Локи скоро освободится и всем наступит пизд*». Нормально, так да? Логика просто великолепная.

Кстати, еще один минус автора – совсем не круто давить на жалость через животных. Это такой шаблонище и примитивщина, что рыдать хочется, от жалости к автору. Надо завязывать с этой серией.

Our story continues with Gwen seeking the Helheim Dagger's location as she tries to avert death due to reapers.

1. Action -- still a lot of action as somebody is always trying to kill Gwen. This time around, we have some new players in the game.
2. More is revealed -- we learn a lot more about Daphne, Logan, Gwen, Grace, Grandma Frost, Reaper Girl, and many others. We also see some developments with Daphne's powers, Gwen's powers, Logan and Gwen's relationship, Gwen and Nike's relationship.
3. Gwen gets a new sidekick and this sidekick made me happy


If you liked the other books, you will like this one too. It advances the story on many different fronts and introduces many new wrinkles into this Loki problem.

For me the beginning of this book was rather slow and boring, but it picked up halfway through and got really interesting to read. I enjoyed this book, it was entertaining but there was something that kept me from loving it.

I feel like this whole series is on auto pilot. It feels rather shallow and like the author is just churning out books but doesn't actually enjoy writing this story. Maybe. I can't quite put my feelings into the right words but I feel like this whole series is lacking something huge.

There were things in this book that I was sure was meant to move emotional mountains. But I felt unfazed by them. I wasn't completely pulled in to feel the emotions it was trying to illicit. In fact I felt rather removed from the characters and the events because for some reason this story just felt very cookie cut out or paper thin. It felt like the same paranormal romance I've read a hundred times before. It didn't feel original at all.

All the same though I enjoyed this book for what it was. I enjoy this series for what it is.

I love Mythology books and these are a great series of books. I love seeing how these books progress and how Gwen deals with the things that are thrown her way. I love all the characters especially Gwen and Logan.

I would recommend these books for anybody who loves Mythology genre.
