I've been pretty excited to finally find out what end the Beaudelaire orphans might meet. Part 12, The Penultimate Peril, did not go the way I expected, so I was ready to be surprised.
As usual, Daniel Handler aka Lemony Snicket introduced some very interesting ideas, that will give you some food for thought if you spend some time thinking about them.
However, if you expect the final installment to clear everything up, I will have to disappoint you. Actually, there's even more mysteries introduced that will leave you confused and longing for an answer. But, believe it or not, with The End we reach a point where it doesn't even matter. Despite not getting a final resolution, you don't end up annoyed but still somewhat pleased. It's not the end you hoped for but it's the end this story needed.

This was an interesting end to the series. There are a lot of unanswered questions, but I don’t think it would fit in with the rest of the series if everything was explained. While I can’t say it was a completely happy ending for the Baudelaires, I think they’ve reached a happy medium.

As a whole, I adored this series. It was intelligent and creative and unique and gloriously dark for something meant for 9-12 year olds. I can’t wait to some day read it to my children.
