The story begins in July of 1864. While on board the Duncan, a yacht, Lord Edward Glenarvan, Lady Helena Glenarvan, and Major McNabbs, Lord Glenarvan's cousin, find a bottle and break it open to retrieve the notes inside which inform them that, two years ago, Native Americans took Captain Grant of the ship, Britannia, and two sailors prisoners and they request assistance or they will perish. Mary and Robert Grant, Captain Grant's children, who are orphans in Scotland, meet with Lady Helena to find out if they can make an appointment with the Queen to organize a ship to search for their father and the sailors. After being denied a ship, Helena proposes she, her husband, Mary, and Robert board the Duncan to look for Captain Grant and the sailors. The yacht first stops in Glasgow to make plans for a voyage to the Southern Seas and possibly the rest of the world.
