THE SCRIBE features beautiful, intrepid lawyer, Madeline Kramer, who has come a long way since losing her parents in a car accident aged nine. Raised by her grandmother, she has a flourishing career at top City law firm, Channing & Barton, and a tight-knit group of friends, including flat-mate Paul King. But when a colleague and former classmate of hers – ruthlessly ambitious trainee, Sarah Morrell, - is found shot dead in a meeting room, her chest inscribed with “Contract”, Maddy’s ordered life is turned upside down.
It soon becomes clear that the killer is targeting former students at The Bloomsbury Academy of Law where Maddy studied, killing them according to a pattern corresponding with the legal syllabus, and in carefully chosen locations. Even more disconcerting are riddles sent by the killer to the investigating officer, Chief Inspector Jake Carver, claiming to offer clues as to the next victim and location.
Everything points to Maddy's former law professor, James Stirling, who had affairs with each of the victims. But there is also his embittered wife, former concert cellist, Elizabeth Stirling, who knows about her husband’s affairs, and once confronted Sarah. It's a race against time as the bodies stack up and Maddy must deal with personal loss, unscramble complex riddles, and put her own life, and the lives of others, on the line. The action crescendos to a thrilling conclusion and final twist.
