Life and Death (Midwest Studies in Philosophy, v. 24)
Midwest Studies in Philosophy, Volume XXIV, Life and Death: Metaphysics and Ethics is an important contribution to the literature on the intersection of issues of metaphysics and issues of ethics. The phenomenology of Edmund Husserl is being analyzed in regard to its ontological implications. It is demonstrated that Husserl's method of reduction directly leads to an ontological idealism for which there is no epistemological justification. An alternative to this idealistic misunderstanding of the phenomenological approach is being developed in applying Heidegger's existential analysis to questions of epistemology and transcendental philosophy. This project examines the cultural and political differences between Europe and America and contends that Britain's 'special relationship' with America, although well-intentioned, continues to undermine greater European cooperation and integration - a problem for Europe which can only be solved if and when a number of the suggestions made in this title are not merely considered, but democratically implemented.
Researches in the Phenomena of Spiritualism (Cambridge Library Collection - Spiritualism and Esoteric Knowledge)
by William Crookes
Published in 1874, this collection of reports by the chemist and scientific journalist Sir William Crookes (1832-1919) describes his controversial research into psychic forces. In 1870, Crookes decided that science had a duty to study preternatural phenomena associated with spiritualism, and he spent the next four years carrying out experiments which tested famous mediums including D. D. Home, Kate Fox and Florence Cook. This fascinating work describes Crookes' witnessing of the movement of bodi...
