Matched by Ally Condie

Matched (Matched, #1)

by Ally Condie

Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

Look for CROSSED, the sequel to MATCHED, in Fall 2011!

Initial thoughts: This book is surprisingly mellow for a Dystopian. In a way, I think it's supposed to set up for the turmoil that will surface in the sequels. That's not a bad thing. In a way, this mellowness brought out the characteristics of the people and their society.

When I got started on this book, I had no idea that it's being touted as a book for people who like romance and dystopia. Then I read the synopsis about the supposed love triangle. It was a good thing I had already started reading because based on the synopsis, I might have thought the better of it.

While the synopsis isn't wrong, I don't think it's entirely right either. There's a lot more to the dynamics and relationships among Cassia, Xander and Ky. While I'm not scrambling to read the next book immediately, I do plan to continue reading to find out what happens next.
