Tempest Maguire is happy with her decision to embrace her mermaid nature and live among her mother's clan within the ocean's depths. Even though training to one day ascend the throne for the aging mermaid queen is rigorous, she finds refuge in the arms of Kona, the selkie who first opened her up to her mermaid side. But when word comes that one of her brothers has been gravely injured on land, Tempest immediately rushes to his side-which also brings her back to her old flame, Mark. And in her absence, a deadly battle begins raging at the hands of Tempest's old nemesis, the sea witch Tiamat. As the dangerous war erupts, Tempest's two loves-Kona and Mark, sea and land-will collide for the first time, both to protect her and to force her to choose.
Tempest is happy with her decision to embrace the mermaid side of herself, knowing that it was the right thing to do. Training is rigorous, but she knows it will be worth it in the end if she is to save her people. When her younger brother is injured, she abandons her life under the sea to rush to his side. Tensions rise as her two loves, Mark and Kona collide, forcing her to choose between them, and herself. While she is distracted on land, a battle erupts under the sea. Tiamat The story dragged. I felt like there wasn’t as much plot here as there needed to be, so events happened very slowly to make up for it. The climax waits for the last possible second, and while entertaining, it ended on a highly depressing note. Normally, I would like such a severity of the story, but it left that indigestion feeling. The action was well written and engaging, so it was a bit of a page turner, but I was less than thrilled with the ending.
The characters here haven’t changed much from the first novel. Tempest is growing a little and has become easier to tolerate, but that is about it really. I still love Kona, even if I have a feeling that I shouldn’t love him. I have a feeling the love triangle is going to ruin my love for him. Still not a fan of Mark. I want to be, but I just don’t dig him.
In a way, I enjoyed this book better than it’s predecessor, but it did have it’s flaws. Still one of the better mermaid series on the market right now that I have come across.
