The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

The Hate U Give (The Hate U Give, #1)

by Angie Thomas

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

Initial thoughts: My back hurts because I didn't move from my spot the past three hours, reading The Hate U Give. This is so powerfully written, has so much heart and an incredibly strong voice. Given the subject matter, I can't say I loved this book. It cuts too close to reality, which is a horrible one.

As an outsider who doesn't even live in the US, it's hard to grapple with and understand what it's like for Black people who have to fear for their lives the moment they're born. I still don't understand why innocent lives are lost at the hands of the very people who're supposed to protect them. But I did learn a little more about the complexities of choosing to speak up or be silent when the justice system is so bent against Black people.

The Hate U Give is such an important book, that I join everyone else who implores the world to read it.
