Liturgy of the Ordinary

by Tish Harrison Warren

Christianity Today Book of the Year

In the overlooked moments and routines of our day, we can become aware of God's presence in surprising ways. How do we embrace the sacred in the ordinary and the ordinary in the sacred?
Framed around one typical day, this book explores life through the lens of liturgy-small practices and habits that form us. In each chapter, Tish Harrison Warren considers a common daily experience-making the bed, brushing her teeth, losing her keys. Drawing from the diversity of her life as a campus minister, Anglican priest, friend, wife, and mother, Warren opens up a practical theology of the everyday. Each activity is related to a spiritual practice as well as an aspect of our Sunday worship.
Come and discover the holiness of your every day.

I started this book a couple of years ago as part of a book club I belonged to, but it got set aside for other things, with the intention of returning to it. I'm not sure why I left it for so long, but I'm glad I got back to it now, because it was what I really needed to read.

The author asks the question: 'How do we embrace the sacred in the ordinary and the ordinary in the sacred?' In this book she answers that question by looking at things she does from her ordinary life and showing how these things become part of who we are. She relates these seemingly ordinary or mundane tasks to spiritual practice and worship and shows how even in these things we can experience God's presence.

I need to reread this at some point and, at the same time, work through the discussion questions and practices included at the end of the book. I'd heartily recommend this book for anyone who has problems in relating to God through their every day lives, to help see the liturgy of the ordinary.
