Supernaturally (Paranormalcy, #2)

After Paranormalcy, Evie is trying to live a normal life. She has an apartment with a vampire. She works as a waitress at a diner run by a tree. Her boyfriend is basically made of water. See, normal. Well, as normal as she can get. However, when the fairies start taking a special interest in her and the IPCA (International Paranormal Containment Agency) wants her back on the team, she doesn’t know what mess she is getting herself into. With a returning cast of great characters and a few new ones, Supernaturally is the sequel that I enjoyed (maybe not as much as the first, but very close).

Paranormalcy was the highlight of my summer last year. With its humorous takes on a teenager trying to deal with creatures that go bump in the night and being normal, White made something that should be read by every young adult. If you’ve read Paranormalcy, why haven’t you read Supernaturally yet? I know I was asking myself the same question. I didn’t know how much I missed Evie and her hilarious narrative until I had the second book in my hands.

All the awesome characters from before are back. Evie, my favorite character, has returned as narrator and is awesome. No matter what trouble she is in, she always finds a way for some comic relief to seep through into the narrative. White had me laughing through most of the book, even during some of the serious scenes, something would crack me up. Then, of course, Evie’s boyfriend, Lend is back. Lend is going to college and is absent through a lot of the book. However, the scenes he is in, he takes center stage and I love that. There is always some subplot going on with him that adds some extra what’s going to happen to that, now feel. A few new characters are introduced. One in particular is Jack, a crazy boy who likes to jump on beds and pop people’s bubbles. He is a wonderfully drawn character. In the end, when it all came together, Jack was put into a new light and I hope there is more of him in the third book Endlessly, because I don’t think I have had enough of him yet. He is one of those characters that you love to have around even though he may be extremely annoying.

White knows how to make a story. She is not done yet, with the third book coming out soon. I hope this series keeps going for a while. I want to know what Evie is doing right now. Yes, White writes so well that instead of reading the book, I feel like I am immersed in the story, so much so that it is as if I am having my own conversation with Evie about her life.

The ending threw me off because it didn’t feel like an ending. I realize that there is going to be a third one but I felt like I was watching one of those episodes on television and having it say “to be continued.” I was disappointed in the ending because there were so many loose ends, and I wanted to know where White was going with this. There are so many questions I have and I just hope that they are answered in Endlessly.

Where Paranormalcy brought a fresh new look on catching those creatures of the night (not just vampires), Supernaturally is a sequel with sass that will leave you dying to get your hands on the third.
