Crown Conspiracy (Riyria Revelations, Book 1, Part 1)

by Michael J. Sullivan

THEY KILLED THE KING. THEY PINNED IT ON TWO MEN. THEY CHOSE POORLY. There's no ancient evil to defeat, no orphan destined for greatness, just two guys in the wrong place at the wrong time. Royce Melborn, a skilled thief, and his mercenary partner, Hadrian Blackwater make a profitable living carrying out dangerous assignments for conspiring nobles until they become the unwitting scapegoats in a plot to murder the king. Sentenced to death, they have only one way out.

The Crown Conspiracy is a worthy debut in the fantasy genre. It's simple (no getting bogged down in the complicated names and geography that so many fantasy novels have), yet totally engrossing. I actually put it down a few times because I didn't want to reach the end too quickly. I always appreciate some good political intrigue, and my favorite part of the book involved a secret prison decorated with the faces of the people who built it. It's a self-contained story, but I picked up on several threads that could be expanded on in the 5 remaining books in the series. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a new voice in the genre.
