A Time for Home by

A Time for Home (A Snowberry Creek Novel, #1)

Welcome to the small rustic town of Snowberry Creek....

As Nick Jenkins travels from the war zones of Afghanistan to his comrade's hometown, the kinds of wounds he carries with him have little to do with the shrapnel damage to his arm. Burdened with the guilt of failing to save his friend Spence, Nick is nonetheless determined to find a home for the dog that had been Spence's constant companion.

Callie Redding, Spence's childhood best friend, was shocked to learn he left her his old Victorian home. She's even more surprised when one of his war buddies shows up with a dog at his side-and a heavy weight on his shoulders. As a tribute to their friend's life, Nick agrees to help Callie turn her inheritance into a welcoming bed-and-breakfast for the town of Snowberry Creek.

But as they work through their grief together, they also share something far more precious-the belief that love is worth fighting for....

I was really looking forward to this story. I had Alexis Morgan on my want to read list for quite awhile now. This sounded like it was right up my alley with a wounded hero working past his grief with the help of the relationship he finds with someone who can share his grief.

Unfortunately, Nick's guilt about feeling responsible for not saving Spence and then returning to Spence's hometown and falling for Spence's girl and stepping into the life that Spence has wanted, got tedious after awhile. He would kiss Callie and get guilty and withdraw. He would want to kiss Callie again, and get guilty and withdraw. Over and over and over. Even his other buddy made him feel guilty over spending time with Spence's woman. Even though Spence and Callie were only childhood best friends. Just the fact that Spence had wanted to come home and make more of his relationship with Callie was enough to brand her as off limits.

I started the story thinking Nick and Callie were likable characters, but then realized they were just kind of boring.

One of Callie's friend, Bridey, as well as the Chief of Police gave hints of being more interesting story characters.
